My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Autumncrow

Matt McMann Why did I love this book?

As a big fan of spooky short story collections, I was really looking forward to Autumncrow by Cameron Chaney, host of the fantastic spooky book recommendation account and YouTube channel Library Macabre.

This book far surpassed my already high expectations. The stories are truly unique takes on hallowed horror anchor points, wonderfully balancing comforting accessibility with genuine originality. Cameron is an expert of the horror genre, and his writing is crisp and visceral. A truly impressive debut.

Cameron Chaney, host of Library Macabre, presents seven new tales of All Hallows terror, along with his newly revised novella “There Are Monsters Here," in print for the very first time.

Welcome to Autumncrow Valley, where every night is Halloween. Enjoy your stay! But first, a few words of warning: Stay out of the forest. Never venture out after dark. And don’t stare too long into the shadows . . . you may not like what you see. Have a pleasant visit. We hope it won’t be your last.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of It Found Us

Matt McMann Why did I love this book?

Already a huge Lindsay Currie fan, I jumped at the chance to read It Found Us.

It lived up to my already sky-high expectations. The wonderfully spooky cover and title are matched by the story of amateur sleuth Hazel, her brother Den, and friend Maggie solving the mystery of a fellow student who disappeared while playing hide and seek in a graveyard.

Authentic and often humorous banter among the trio brings a welcome lightness to balance the excellent atmospheric creep factor. Currie excels at creating genuinely scary moments without resorting to gore or violence. She does creeping dread so well. Fans of high-quality middle grade fiction with a spooky bent will love this latest title from a truly gifted author.

What is this book about?

From the author of Scritch Scratch and The Girl in White comes a new spooky mystery about a girl detective who must decode a series of ominous clues tied to a century-old tragedy to find a missing teenager before it's too late…

Twelve-year-old Hazel Woods has always had an unusual knack for sleuthing. Some may call it snooping, but all she really wants is to solve mysteries around town. So, when she not-so-accidentally overhears her brother Den planning to sneak into the cemetery at night for an epic game of hide-and-seek, she decides to secretly tag along. This seems like…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Wise Man's Fear

Matt McMann Why did I love this book?

Writing fresh epic fantasy is hard. It’s been done by masters like Tolkien, Lewis, and Brooks, and imitated by many.

In the Kingkiller Chronicles, Patrick Rothfus weaves a wildly imaginative, complex world that is grounded in earthy reality and incredibly developed without being confusing. Kvothe is one of my favorite literary characters, at once noble and flawed, heroic and tragic, deep and humorous.

A masterwork of varied story threads that weave a single beautiful tapestry.

DAY TWO: THE WISE MAN'S FEAR

"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale told from his own point of view-a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man's Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, an escalating rivalry with a powerful…
