Book cover of When Women Were Dragons

Linda Kay Silva Why did I love this book?

In a time when women’s rights are being attacked from all angles, this book reminds us how strong we are, how capable we can be, and that we are all dragons if we want to be.

With outstanding protagonists, a great storyline, and fast pacing, it kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. I couldn’t put it down. I laughed, I cried, and I found myself thinking about the characters even when I wasn’t reading it. I want to see these women again!

I enjoyed it so much that I then listened to it on tape. I teach women’s literature, and if I could add this book to the syllabus, I would in a heartbeat.

What is this book about?

A KIRKUS BEST BOOK OF 2022 • A rollicking feminist tale set in 1950s America where thousands of women have spontaneously transformed into dragons, exploding notions of a woman’s place in the world and expanding minds about accepting others for who they really are. • The first adult novel by the Newbery award-winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon

Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of On Second Thought

Linda Kay Silva Why did I love this book?

Strong female characters make me lean in, and these two sisters, both dealing with the loss of two not-so-great men in their lives, had me leaning, laughing, and loving every sentence. I actually barked a laugh out loud several times because these sisters are irreverent and edgy, reminding me of the sassy, edgy me of my youth.

The plot is immersive and I loved feeling like I was a friend they were both confiding in. I love a book that makes me laugh and sigh at the same time.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Good Luck With That, If You Only Knew and Now That You Mention It comes an irresistible look at the affection and the acrimony that bind sisters together

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Housemaid

Linda Kay Silva Why did I love this book?

Twists and turns abound in this first of a series novel that had me rushing through grocery shopping so I could get back to it.

Though not a fan of first person, I loved the main character so much that I went with it. It’s a thriller, it’s a romance, it’s a character study all rolled into one, and I have already finished the next in the series because the housemaid is…well…crazy like a fox, and I can relate!

Such a fun read, I have suggested it to my friends who run book clubs. Every time I thought, “Ah ha!” it turned out to be an “Uh uh.” So much fun!
