Book cover of Orthodoxy

Derek Prior Why did I love this book?

Orthodoxy is Chesterton’s answer to a critic who claimed it was all very well for G.K. to criticize the philosophy of others, but he had yet to state his own philosophy. The response, Orthodoxy, contains some of Chesterton’s best writing.

It is rife with wit and paradox, and he turns many preconceptions on their head. The result is a lively exposition of a worldview full of romance and gratitude. The book is a remedy to modern nihilism but never preachy.

What is this book about?

Orthodoxy, G. K. Chesterton’s unique memoir of faith, was named “one of the 10 indispensable spiritual classics of the past 1500 years.” by Publisher’s Weekly.

“All Christianity concentrates on the man at the cross-roads. The vast and shallow philosophies, the huge synthesis of humbug, all talk about ages and evolution and ultimate developments. The true philosophy is concerned with the instant. Will a man take this road or that?—that is the only thing to think about, if you enjoy thinking.” —from Orthodoxy

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Crucible of Lies

Derek Prior Why did I love this book?

In A Crucible of Lies, Mitchell Hogan makes a compelling use of the first person point of view, with some scenes from the perspective of the protagonist as an ancient and somewhat dubious emperor and others of him as a young man.

The two time periods are interconnected, and both are vital to the unfurling of the plot. There are strong characters and relationships without characters I really cared about. There is sorcery in abundance, as well as many intense action scenes. The tension keeps building right up until the stunning climax. It's probably the best fantasy novel I've read in years.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of War Lord

Derek Prior Why did I love this book?

Warlord is the final book in Cornwell’s Last Kingdom series. Uhtred is an old man now, but there’s still fight in him. As with the rest of the series, characterization is strong throughout.

There are strong themes of friendship and betrayal played out within the historical context of the founding of England. The prose is crisp and succinct, and the battle scenes incomparable. Cornwell never overwrites his action scenes and manages to convey every impact like a real blow to the head.

This is certainly a series I am sad to have completed. It's one of the more enjoyable reads of the decade.
