Crucible of Lies

In A Crucible of Lies, Mitchell Hogan makes a compelling use of the first person point of view, with some scenes from the perspective of the protagonist as an ancient and somewhat dubious emperor and others of him as a young man.

The two time periods are interconnected, and both are vital to the unfurling of the plot. There are strong characters and relationships without characters I really cared about.
