Book cover of Song of Destiny

Tricia Copeland Author Of To be a Fae Queen

From my list on Indie Fantasy books with creative spins.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been obsessed with fantasy since my grandmother bought me the entire Dorothy and the Land of Oz series as a kid. I love discovering new types of fantasy characters, spins on characters, new lore in genres, and mythology woven in creative ways. For my fantasy group, Iā€™ve researched many interpretations of fae, witches, elves, vampires, and shapeshifters. Iā€™m always looking to add to my list, and I love finding Indie authors new to their niche. I feel so privileged to interview many authors like these and Jennifer L. Armentrout (squeal) for my podcast, The Finding the Magic Book Podcast. I hope you love these books as much as I did.

Tricia's book list on Indie Fantasy books with creative spins

Tricia Copeland Why did Tricia love this book?

This book spins two genres I love together: mythology and urban fantasy. Characters must be likable, even lovable, for me to get into a book, and Korrina definitely is that!

I havenā€™t read many Siren books, but Korrina's story and plight drew me in. I became endeared to her and her band of friends quickly. I loved how the author hides secrets within layers of the story and twists of the plot. These discoveries kept me turning pages.

What is this book about?

My voice kills. His touch silences my song. Together we'll either save the world...

Or destroy it.

I once believed sirens had mermaid tails, crustacean companions, and you know...werenā€™t real.

How wrong I was.

Turns out sirens have wings, a talking owl spirit guide, and are very, very real.

Not only that, theyā€™re cursed with wings to soar the skies, searching for the lost goddess Persephone, because it was their fault she was kidnapped by Hades.

My familyā€™s fault.

Centuries later, only a few sirens remain. And apparently Iā€™m the one destined to break the curse to save them all.ā€¦

Book cover of A Girl's Guide to Love & Magic

Polly Farquhar Author Of Lolo Weaver Swims Upstream

From my list on middle-grade books where setting makes the story.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love books where the setting is just as big and alive as the characters. It doesnā€™t matter to me if itā€™s a familiar place or someplace new: if a vivid setting is a key element of the story, Iā€™m in. I think itā€™s because I grew up in one of those small towns in the beautiful middle of nowhere where if someone asks where youā€™re from, itā€™s just easier to say someplace else. I wanted to see the world, and books let me do that. I also wanted validation in readingā€”and writingā€”about the small places I knew, and books let me do that, too.

Polly Farquhar Why did Polly love this book?

Iā€™ve read countless books set in New York City or its boroughs, and Iā€™m going to confess that sometimes they can feel a little generic. Not A Girl's Guide to Love and Magic.

The plot in this book is driven by Cicelyā€™s quest to save her aunt through a scavenger hunt of sorts that is all tied into the excitement and action of the West Indian Parade on Labor Day in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

I also love how while this is technically a young adult book (Cicely is a sophomore in high school), it can be a great read for most older middle-grade readers, especially those who want to read up.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked A Girl's Guide to Love & Magic as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 13, 14, 15, and 16.

What is this book about?

Perfect for fans of The Sun Is Also a Star and Blackout, this YA novel from Debbie Rigaud is a celebration of Haitian and Caribbean culture, and a story of first love, vodou, and finding yourself, all set against the backdrop of the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn.

Cicely Destin lives for the West Indian Day Parade, the joyous celebration of Caribbean culture that takes over the streets of her neighborhood. She loves waving the Haitian flag, sampling delicious foods, and cheering for the floats. And this year? Sheā€™ll get to hang with her stylish aunt, an influencer knownā€¦

Book cover of Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire: What Happens When God's Spirit Invades the Hearts of His People

Jill Eileen Smith Author Of The Prince and the Prodigal

From my list on prodigals, prayer, forgiveness, and never giving up.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been fascinated with the subjects of forgiveness and reconciliation most of my life. Iā€™ve spent years researching people of the Old Testament, and as I read their stories, I see their need for these things in their relationships. It is a universal need of humans. Because I write about people who actually lived, I read books that deal with the things we all face. Truth is, time may change, but the human heart does not. Iā€™m an amateur theologian and avid reader of books that will help me grow as a person and allow me to understand these ancient people who walked before us.

Jill Eileen Smith Why did Jill love this book?

Even committed Christians lose heart sometimes. We all need a breath of Godā€™s fresh wind, the fresh fire of His Spirit moving in our lives. I picked up this book at a time when I needed just such encouragement.

Like Joseph, we all face devastating trials, heartbreak, emotional struggles. Itā€™s part of the human condition. And Iā€™d bet Iā€™m not alone when I say Iā€™ve known what hopelessness feels like.

I loved this quote from the book: ā€œIn the same way, God does His most stunning work where things seem hopeless. Wherever there is pain, suffering, and desperation, Jesus is.ā€

We may not realize it, but everyone everywhere desperately needs Jesus. Joseph needed Him in the pit and the prison. We need Him in our private pits and prisons too.
