Book cover of Mog the Forgetful Cat

Lil Chase Author Of The Cat Who Ate Christmas

From my list on frisky fictional felines (for children).

Why am I passionate about this?

As the author of The Cat Who Ate Christmas, I love a book about a cat who is cunning, quirky, perhaps calamity-prone, but also a cutie. There are plenty of books about loving pets, but their characters all seem to be too earnest, too driven to do the right thing. Not with cats! They will lie, cheat and do what it takes to get what they want… as long as it doesn’t get in the way of nap time. Cats are anti-heroes by nature, aren’t they? That’s why they make the best animals to read about – and an absolute dream to write about.

Mog is a sweet old cat. She’s very loving to her family – The Thomas’s – but very dim. She doesn’t understand the human world and her hilarious misunderstandings get her into a lot of hot water. Occasionally, she accidentally saves the day too – usually from a disaster of her own making.

The combination of this lovable cat who gets it wrong is a perennial winner. The first Mog book was written over 50 years ago and has never been out of print.

The original and best. Puss in Boots is an Italian fairytale, first recorded in 1550, told and retold by many people including the Brothers Grimm and the Disney corporation. This crafty cat charms and connives his way to the very top – to royalty, no less!

The miller’s son was disappointed to receive a cat as a gift from his father. But the cat – who asks only for a pair of boots – tricks the miller’s son into getting naked and robs his clothes… just as the King and his daughter are passing. The King’s daughter falls in love with the miller’s son and, convinced by Puss’s trickery that the miller’s son is a rich marquis, marries him.

Rather than rags to riches, this is a boots to riches tale.

I loved these comic strips as a kid. I had the extended graphic novels too. What’s so appealing about Garfield is that he’s such a realistic cat: he can be loving, he can be selfish, he can be needy, and he can be cruel. Sometimes he just wants to sleep. At other times he’s out all night singing on the fence, keeping the neighbourhood awake. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to his moods.

Sounds like many of the fickle felines I’ve known in real life.

Get ready for a triple dose of laughs with the world's funniest fat cat.

Garfield's back in all his gut-busting glory: catching his tongue in the electric mixer; revealing his distate for milk (he was once frightened by an udder); pranking Jon for serving him a rubber pizza; and bobbing for croutons.

When it comes to humor, forget the rest, you've found the best—Garfield!

Slinky Malinki might be the perfect picture book: the illustrations are exquisite and detailed, the text rattles along in a perfect rhythmic rhyme.

Pride always comes before the fall in great works of fiction, and one night Slinky Malinki gets greedy; and his midnight excursions are rumbled by the family and he ends up in hot water. He learns his lesson: ‘Never again does he answer the call’ of wickedness.

It’s a shame really, because of all of these frisky felines Slinky Malinki is my favourite. But only when he’s being a ‘rapscallion cat.’

Book cover of Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned about Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat

Meredith Marple Author Of The Year Mrs. Cooper Got Out More: A Great Wharf Novel

From my list on people with other animals in the mix.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a former independent publisher and current writer of memoir and fiction. My degree was in zoology (animal biology), which got me my first job in educational publishing. After a solid career in textbooks, I switched over to trade publishing and finally writing. I may have left the "hard science" behind, but I continue to be fascinated by human and animal behavior, which shows up in my reading and writing.

Meredith's book list on people with other animals in the mix

Meredith Marple Why did Meredith love this book?

The animal is a spunky blind cat. The human is his adoptive mother who can’t resist adding the three-week-old kitten to her household of two other cats while trying to heal from a recent breakup. A memoir with a cool twist. You never know when you adopt a pet, how its personality will unfold; it was fun to read how memoirist Cooper struck paydirt with Homer.

1 author picked Homer's Odyssey as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. But Homer was no ordinary cat. He was a three week old, abandoned, eyeless kitten and Gwen was unable to resist his charm. It was love at first sight.

Homer, tagged as an 'underachiever' from day one, quickly proved his doubters wrong revealing himself to be a tiny dare devil with a giant heart and a passion for adventure. The kitten they said would never be as independent or as playful as the other cats…

Book cover of Caring for Your Lion

Becky Scharnhorst Author Of My School Stinks!

From my list on fiercely funny friendships.

Why am I passionate about this?

Three of my favorite things are reading, writing, and laughing. So, of course, my favorite books are usually the ones that make me giggle. I also have a slightly dark sense of humor which means I have a soft spot for books where one of the characters may get eaten. But I think the very best books are ones where unexpected friendships occur instead. So often our perceptions about others are wrong, and if we just take the time to get to know the animal (or person) behind those extra sharp teeth, we may find we have more in common than we realized.

Becky's book list on fiercely funny friendships

Becky Scharnhorst Why did Becky love this book?

I knew I’d love this book as soon as I read the first few lines. “Congratulations on your new lion! We know you ordered a kitten, but we ran out of those.” This hilarious how-to book provides the main character with all the instructions they need to care for their purrrrfect pet. The straightforward text pairs perfectly with the comical illustrations to show the chaotic reality of caring for an oversized feline friend. As someone whose own pets have brought both enormous destruction and enormous love, I found myself rooting for this fierce friendship. There are also tons of hilarious details in the illustrations. The pizza flavors alone will leave kids laughing and begging for more. This picture book is a roaring good time!

What happens when you expect an itty-bitty kitty...but get a lion instead? It's kitten delivery day, but - surprise! Congratulations on your new lion! We know you ordered a kitten, but we ran out of those. Fortunately, the big cat comes with instructions - like, try very hard NOT to look like a zebra. Or a gazelle. And give your lion plenty of space to play. But soon the feathers and fur start flying and everything's in chaos. Is there any way a lion could actually be a child's purr-feet pet?

Book cover of Meow or Never: Wish Novel

Sylvia Liu Author Of Manatee's Best Friend

From my list on animal and human friendships.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been fascinated with the natural world and our relationship with it since I was young. In my first career, as an environmental attorney, I worked to protect oceans and endangered species. Now, as a children’s author, I enjoy exploring environmental themes, as well as the unique bonds people have with animals, in my stories. The books I am recommending are recently published middle-grade novels that capture the magical connection between humans and animals, or animals with each other, whether in contemporary or fantasy settings. I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, and live in Virginia with my family and our adorable hypoallergenic cat.
