Epic fantasy is the genre that I probably enjoy the most. There’s just something special about starting out on an adventure, off along an unknown path, where you meet friends, companions, rivals, and enemies alike. The narrative often surrounds something world-changing, like evil trying to destroy the good in the world or some foul plot afoot that would see the ‘good guys’ lose. Despite the good vs evil appearance, there are always shades of gray that the heroes confront and need to navigate, and then the question always remains: did they make the right choice?

What is not to love about the LotR series? Everything from the world, the characters, the descriptions, and the entire narrative is truly sublime. But what I think I liked the best about Tolkien’s work is the depth of his lore.

Not only did he build an entire history for all the races, but he also created their individual languages and heritage. The breadth of work Tolkien put into Middle Earth is staggering and is something all fantasy authors (myself included) have tried to emulate in their own work.

Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien's classic tale of adventure, which continues in…

What I like most about Salvatore’s work is how much of a fund adventure it is; from epic fight scenes to deep character internalizations, you get drawn into the world and get to know the characters. I’ve listed Salvatore’s Icewind Dale Trilogy previously, and he takes everything to another level completely with this one.

It is so much fun to join Drizzt as he journeys deep into the Underdark and fights alongside the companions of the hall, who face down hundreds of rows in an epic battle.

The Witcher series is another epic that once you start reading you won’t be able to stop. Although I think some things are lost in translation from Polish to English, it is still gripping and thoroughly enjoyable. Like all fantasy, Sapkowski has created a fascinating world and lore, including language and history.

But where this series excels is with the main character of Geralt—a surly warrior for hire whose emotions are destroyed during the process he was forced to undertake to become a Witcher. But as you get to know Geralt, you realize those emotions are certainly not destroyed, and the subtleties of the character interactions are engrossing.

Like the other books on my list, there is nothing I can say about this series that hasn’t already been said by everyone else on the internet. But what I liked most about it is the intricacies of the family histories and how lineage drives the enthralling narrative.

Of course, ‘most’ of the characters are fascinating, and their individual journeys, which sometimes intertwine, will keep you glued to the pages throughout this fantasy epic.

Book cover of Dragons of Autumn Twilight

Kaeleb LD Appleby Why did I love this book?

What captivates me about this series is its embrace of classic fantasy tropes. It encompasses every archetype: quests, battles, betrayal, and the eternal conflict between good and evil. Most compellingly, you forge a deep connection with the characters—you share their laughter and tears and are reluctant to see their journey end.

The series excels in character development, turning the characters into beloved heroes and companions. The thrilling and fast-paced adventures ensure there's never a dull moment. I recommend this series to fantasy fans of all ages. Its accessible narrative style also makes it an ideal entry point for newcomers to the genre.

Why am I passionate about this?

Growing up in New England, my mother had a set of books that she kept in the living room, more for display than anything else. It was The Works of Edgar Allen Poe. I read them and instantly became hooked on horror. In the seventh grade, I entertained my friends at a sleepover by telling them the mysterious clanking noise (created by the baseboard heater) was the ghost of a woman who had once lived in the farmhouse, forced to cannibalize her ten children during a particularly bad winter. And I’ve been enjoying scaring people ever since.
