Why am I passionate about this?

I was always a bookworm, even reading the encyclopedia as a child. I was equally drawn to the sciences and literature and ended up getting a PhD in Chemistry. I visited Asia often for my chemistry work and gradually became interested in the philosophy and religion of Asian cultures. Today, I'm more likely to brag about what I’ve written or read about Chinese culture than I am to mention my technical patents.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of A Canticle for Leibowitz

Joel Bigman Why did I love this book?

I first read the Canticle forty years ago, and yet, when asked to recommend five books, this was the first one that came to mind. It threw me into an insane world, yet one that seemed only too possible.

My favorite character is Abraham, a tent-dwelling timeless man who lives through the several generations that the book follows. I am not a fan of dystopia, but this is an exception. Now that I’ve recommended it- I’m going to go read it again.

By Walter M. Miller, Jr.,

Why should I read it?

11 authors picked A Canticle for Leibowitz as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In the depths of the Utah desert, long after the Flame Deluge has scoured the earth clean, a monk of the Order of Saint Leibowitz has made a miraculous discovery: holy relics from the life of the great saint himself, including the blessed blueprint, the sacred shopping list, and the hallowed shrine of the Fallout Shelter.

In a terrifying age of darkness and decay, these artifacts could be the keys to mankind's salvation. But as the mystery at the core of this groundbreaking novel unfolds, it is the search itself—for meaning, for truth, for love—that offers hope for humanity's rebirth…

Book cover of Small Gods

Joel Bigman Why did I love this book?

I’ve read this book dozens of times. It is completely insanely impossible, yet while I am reading it, it’s as real as the world I live in. It shouldn’t surprise me since it mirrors ours.

Now I understand what cults are all about, where gods come from, how philosophers can be useful, and how weird democracy is.

By Terry Pratchett,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked Small Gods as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Fans of Sir Terry Pratchett will love this stunning graphic novel adaptation of his bestselling standalone Discworld novel Small Gods. Beautifully brought to life by illustrator Ray Friesen, it takes a close look at religion's institutions, its people, its practices and its role in politics in Pratchett's unique way...

'An intriguing satire on institutionalized religion corrupted by power...' - Independent
'Deftly weaves themes of forgiveness, belief and spiritual regeneration' - The Times

Book cover of The Journey to the West

Joel Bigman Why did I love this book?

Wow. This book grabbed me, forced open my mind, and turned me into a Sinophile. I’m into my third reading now, all 2,000 pages of it.

Crazy adventures, Buddhism, Taoism, and a journey into my own society—there’s too much Monkey in me, and I could use a bit more Sha Monk. My own novel is based on this Chinese classic.

Book cover of Killing Commendatore

Joel Bigman Why did I love this book?

I like the idea of a normal, mundane life suddenly turning into a magical adventure. If I pay close attention to my life—it is magical. I’m just too used to it to appreciate it. Why can’t the painting over our piano come to life? Where are the secret passageways to the unknown?

For me, those passageways are in books, where anything is possible.

By Haruki Murakami, Philip Gabriel (translator), Ted Goossen (translator)

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked Killing Commendatore as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The epic new novel from the internationally acclaimed and best-selling author of 1Q84.

In Killing Commendatore, a thirty-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a strange painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious thirteen-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II…

Book cover of First Among Sequels

Joel Bigman Why did I love this book?

This book proved what I already knew: that the world of books is real, and there’s an organization keeping the characters and props in good shape. Small details fascinated me. Like, there is only one piano in all of literature, and a team moves it around to whatever piano scene is currently being read.

I never would have known had I not read this book. I identified best with the mad scientist uncle, but that’s me.

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

The fifth book in the phenomenally successful Thursday Next series, from Number One bestselling author Jasper Fforde.

'Ingenious - I'll watch Jasper Fforde nervously' Terry Pratchett on The Eyre Affair

Fourteen years after she pegged out at 1988 SuperHoop, Thursday Next is grappling with a recalcitrant new apprentice, the death of Sherlock Holmes and the inexplicable departure of comedy from the once-hilarious Thomas Hardy novels.
