By Jane Austen,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked Mansfield Park as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'Full of the energies of discord - sibling rivalry, greed, ambition, illicit sexual passion and vanity' Margaret Drabble

Jane Austen's profound, ambiguous third novel is the story of Fanny Price, who is accustomed to being the poor relation at Mansfield Park, the home of her wealthy plantation-owning uncle. She finds comfort in her love for her cousin Edmund, until the arrival of charismatic outsiders from London throws life at the house into disarray and brings dangerous desires to the surface. Mansfield Park is Austen's most complex work; a powerful portrayal of change and continuity, scandalous misdemeanours and true integrity.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Brighton Rock

John D. Nesbitt 👍 liked this book because...

This novel lakes us into a somewhat seamy underclass of contemporary society. The unfeeling main character is very convincing.

By Graham Greene,

Why should I read it?

5 authors picked Brighton Rock as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Pinkie Brown, a neurotic teenage gangster wielding a razor blade and a bottle of sulfuric acid, commits a brutal murder - but it does not go unnoticed. Rose, a naive young waitress at a rundown cafe, has the unwitting power to destroy his crucial alibi, and Ida Arnold, a woman bursting with easy certainties about what is right and wrong, has made it her mission to bring about justice and redemption.

Set among the seaside amusements and dilapidated boarding houses of Brighton's pre-war underworld, Brighton Rock by Graham Greene is both a gritty thriller and a study of a soul…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Les Miserables

John D. Nesbitt ❤️ loved this book because...

I read this book over a period of many days. At times I had to hang in there because of the digressions or gratuitous content from contemporary France. But the overall achievement of reading the book lies in having read one of the longer books in our literary heritage and one of the major works in the European novel.

By Victor Hugo, Jillian Tamaki (illustrator), Christine Donougher (translator)

Why should I read it?

13 authors picked Les Miserables as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

This is a brilliant new translation by Christine Donougher of Victor Hugo's thrilling masterpiece, with an introduction by Robert Tombs. The Wretched ( Les Miserables) is the basis for both the longest running musical on the West End and the highly-acclaimed recent film starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. Victor Hugo's tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience, and by the relentless investigations of…

What is my book about?

This story is about a boy who grows up poor in a difficult family situation, works in the fields, has a little trouble with the law, becomes educated, and goes on to have a career as an educator and as a writer.
