My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of All Systems Red

Christina Dickinson ❤️ loved this book because...

I haven't connected with a character like I did with Murderbot since the first time I read Green Rider! Just wanting to be left alone to watch shows while the world happens around you is so relatable, and I couldn't get enough. I read every book in the series in less than a week, even the short stories.

I very much enjoyed the atmosphere of this book as well. It was very reminiscent of the first Alien movie. Creepy, dark. Not really gory. I love a good creature flick and I've rarely read a book which captured that so well.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Legendborn

Christina Dickinson ❤️ loved this book because...

Magical Academia blended with King Arthur would've been enough for this book to register as a potential high mark. The way this book wove in ancestral magic and root lore was phenomenal. I love when history and legend get woven into the lore of a story, and Legendborn delivered, big time.

It definitely helped that Bree was such an out-of-bubblegum main character. (Yes, that's a 'They Live' reference.) She was dynamite incarnate and even when she was afraid, she embraced it. One of the strongest YA heroines I've read since Katniss.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Six Wakes

Christina Dickinson ❤️ loved this book because...

The thing I loved most about this book was I couldn't predict it!
I've been reading adult level books since I was very young, and I've taken a lot of writing classes. Most stories follow very set patterns and even when I turn most of my brain off for a book, if the author has done a decent job of it, I know where things are headed. Which isn't to say I dislike the journey—it's just rare for me to be surprised.

But Mur Lafferty blends timelines and character POVs with such a deft touch into a plotline where the characters themselves don't know what's happening. It's done with such finesse, I was in fifty pages before I even realized I'd been hooked! It's a fantastic ride.
