Book cover of Win

Paul Gitsham Why did I love this book?

Windsor Horne Lockwood III is quite simply one of the best characters I’ve read in years.

Lovers of Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar series will already be familiar with his incredibly wealthy, psychopathic best friend. It was always obvious that there was much more to Win than what we saw in those stories and so a spin-off was perhaps inevitable. But this is more than just an attempt to expand an already successful franchise.

Win is complex, flawed, admirable, and arguably despicable in equal measure. Told in first-person, Win is remarkably honest and self-reflective and like all the best anti-heroes leaves you feeling a little guilty for cheering him on.

Add in Coben’s trademark wit and a cracking investigation and you have an absolute Winner (sorry!).

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Lincoln Lawyer

Paul Gitsham Why did I love this book?

I agreed, perhaps a little foolishly, to subject myself to Criminal Mastermind, a spin-off of the popular Mastermind TV quiz, held at this year’s CrimeFest. My specialist subject was Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer series, meaning I had to go back and read them all again.

I hadn’t revisited The Lincoln Lawyer in almost twenty years and had almost forgotten just how good these courtroom thrillers are, and what a fantastic character Micky Haller is. The Lincoln Lawyer itself is a terrific read, but it is also a gateway to a tremendous series.

Reading them all back-to-back, I saw the character evolve over almost twenty years at high-speed and found myself in awe at Connelly’s skill as a writer. Rereading this book, and its sequels, was a highlight of my year.

What is this book about?

They're called Lincoln Lawyers: the bottom of the legal food chain, the criminal defence attorneys who operate out of the back of a Lincoln car, travelling between the courthouses of Los Angeles county to take whatever cases the system throws in their path.

Mickey Haller has been in the business a long time, and he knows just how to work it, how to grease the right wheels and palms, to keep the engine of justice working in his favour. When a Beverly Hills rich boy is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Haller has his first high-paying client in years.…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Find You First

Paul Gitsham Why did I love this book?

Leaving aside the fact that Linwood Barclay is a terrifically-talented writer, I found the premise of this novel intriguing.

Tech billionaire Miles discovers he has a terminal illness. His subsequent re-evaluation of his life leads him to decide to track down his existing biological children to pass on both the good news of their inheritance and potential bad news about their future health.

Barclay explores the ethical implications inherent in this decision in a sensitive and balanced way. However, it soon becomes apparent that there is a killer already stalking his offspring, leading to a race against time, forcing Miles to make other choices.

This book combines a high-concept premise with a clever plot and a devious antagonist, written with Barclay’s trademark wit and characterisation. A highly enjoyable read.
