Book cover of The Language of Transition in Leadership: Your Calling as a Leader in a World of Change

Neil Thompson Why did I love this book?

I met Jakob van Wielink at a conference and was very impressed with him, his knowledge, and his approach, and that made me determined to get hold of the book on leadership he had co-written. I was not disappointed.

So much of the literature on leadership recycles what has been known for years, but this book instantly struck me as fresh and innovative. I love the idea of leadership as a ‘calling’ and I found the use of attachment theory to be very insightful and thought provoking.

The focus of the book is on change, something that so many managers and leaders find quite difficult to deal with. If you are serious about being an effective leader, this book is a must read.

By Jakob van Wielink, Riet Fiddelaers-Jaspers, Leo Wilhelm

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Political Philosophy of AI: An Introduction

Neil Thompson Why did I love this book?

AI has crept up on us and already begun to have a huge impact, bringing both great promise and considerable possible threat.

As an educator, I am fascinated by the possible uses of artificial intelligence, particularly in terms of making learning more fully self-directed, rather than based on a blanket approach (a longstanding interest of mine). So, I was strongly drawn to this book and found that the time invested in reading it was well worth it.

The book highlights the links between AI and how power works in our society. So, it is not a dull technical book, but rather a really interesting and stimulating read that raises an important set of issues not only for educators, but also anyone involved in organizational life.

By Mark Coeckelbergh,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Political Philosophy of AI as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Political issues people care about such as racism, climate change, and democracy take on new urgency and meaning in the light of technological developments such as AI. How can we talk about the politics of AI while moving beyond mere warnings and easy accusations?

This is the first accessible introduction to the political challenges related to AI. Using political philosophy as a unique lens through which to explore key debates in the area, the book shows how various political issues are already impacted by emerging AI technologies: from justice and discrimination to democracy and surveillance. Revealing the inherently political nature…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Trump Tapes: Bob Woodward's Twenty Interviews with President Donald Trump

Neil Thompson Why did I love this book?

Trump has proven to be one of the most divisive people in modern history, with people either loving or hating him. Bob Woodward is one of the most highly respected political journalists, with a strong record of interviewing US presidents.

This book is a set of annotated transcripts of interviews with Trump. What amazes me about these interviews is that Trump was aware of how critical Woodward had been of him and yet he seemed to welcome the opportunity to give him yet more ammunition to shoot him down with. The Trump enigma has puzzled us for some time and will no doubt continue to do so.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this powerful analysis of how Trump’s mind works.

By Bob Woodward,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

"An uncharacteristic warning from one of the most respected, non-partisan journalists in the world" -Jake Tapper, CNN

"It was riveting. I couldn't get enough of it." -Gayle King, CBS Mornings

The Trump Tapes explodes with the exclusive, inside story of Trump's performance as president-in his own words as he is questioned, even interrogated by Woodward, on the president's key responsibilities from managing foreign relations to crisis management of the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the job Trump seeks again. How did he do the first time? This is the authentic answer, laying bare his repeated failures, obsessions, and grievances.
