I chose this book because I watched the Apple TV series adaptation of it called Silo. It is a post-apocalyptic thriller set inside an underground bunker (the silo of the title).
Why were they there? What was really happening outside? What was the origin of the silo’s strange rules? As the show was so thought-provoking, raising so many questions, I decided to turn to the source material.
And I wasn’t disappointed because Howey’s worldbuilding reminded me of that done by Frank Herbert so memorably in Dune. And the great thing is, Wool is long and is followed by another three books…

I love this author’s adult work, especially his Atticus Pünd mysteries, in which he inserts a book within a book. The Twist of a Knife is a good old-fashioned crime/detective mystery in which the main character is a semi-fictionalized version of the author who teams up with an enigmatic detective to solve crimes in London.
Not only are many of the settings familiar to me, but Horowitz also loves wordplay and puns, and often anagrams provide clues to unravel the mystery.
It is the fourth in a series and I am excited to learn that a new one is on the way shortly.

Joël Dicker is another author I am a fan of, having followed his career since his debut, The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.
Like my second recommendation, it features the author as a semi-fictionalized character in the book. The setting of the novel is a grand hotel in the Swiss Alps and revolves around another mystery with multiple timelines as the narrative shifts back and forth.
The writing is concise, spare even, and comes to a very satisfying ending by the time of the book’s conclusion.
