Book cover of Some Danger Involved

Lori Mortensen Why did I love this book?

I love mystery series and was delighted when I discovered this one. Much like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, this book series follows the mysterious exploits of Detective Barker and his assistant Llewelyn, set in gritty Victorian times.

The first-person voice of Llewelyn immediately drew me into his story of how he answered an ad for a position with “some danger involved” and how they ended up trying to solve a gruesome murder of a young scholar in London’s ghetto. Although they walk the streets of Sherlock’s London, they’re wonderfully unique characters and you can’t help rooting for them and seeing what happens next. There are 16 books in the series and I read each one in succession.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of A Face for Picasso: Coming of Age with Crouzon Syndrome

Lori Mortensen Why did I love this book?

I love first-person voices and Ariel did a great job of drawing me into her world of congenital facial disfigurement and the social judgment and isolation that comes with it.

Everyone is flawed, yet her particular variety instantly made her a target. The book is a fascinating journey in understanding her challenge of countless surgeries, vast ignorance, and thoughtlessness of those around her, and how she found the strength to pick up her life and put it back together again and again.

"[It] cuts to the heart of our bogus ideas of beauty." -Scott Westerfeld, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Uglies

I am ugly. There's a mathematical equation to prove it.

At only eight months old, identical twin sisters Ariel and Zan were diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome -- a rare condition where the bones in the head fuse prematurely. They were the first twins known to survive it.

Growing up, Ariel and her sister endured numerous appearance-altering procedures. Surgeons would…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Raven's Gate

Lori Mortensen Why did I love this book?

I love reading Anthony Horowitz’s mystery series for adults—excellent!—however, I had no idea he’d written a middle-grade adventure series. So, of course, I jumped in and ended up reading all the books in the series.

A master of characterization, Horowitz draws the reader into young Matt Freeman’s troubled world where even more trouble awaits. Of course, in the end, Matt is the only one who can save the world from evil. It is an exciting, well-crafted read that appeals to readers of all ages. Well done, Horowitz.

What is my book about?

Isabella Bird was like a wild vine stuck in a too-small pot. But exploring was not an option for a young woman in Victorian England. Yet, Isabella persisted, and with each journey, she breathed in new ways to see and describe everything around her.

Travelling around the world to such places as Africa, Asia, Iran, Korea, Turkey, Tibet, Iran, and China, she wrote 10 bestselling books filled with extraordinary details about the land, the people she met, and the dangers she faced. Back in England, Isabella Bird became the first female member of the Royal Geographical Society and was presented to the Queen.

“No man now ever says of any difficult thing that I could not do it.” -Isabella Bird.
