My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Light Bringer

Gina Detwiler Why did I love this book?

This is just some of the best fiction writing in any genre today, hands down. Genius world-building, memorable characters, soaring prose, great story, biting humor to offset the often gruesome violence—I want to write like Pierce when I grow up.

This is the 6th book in the Red Rising series and, thankfully, not the last. He does something many science fiction writers can never do: make you care deeply about the characters. It’s a long wait between installments—usually, I go back and reread the other books because there’s so much richness I missed the first few times.

What is this book about?

Darrow returns as Pierce Brown’s New York Times bestselling Red Rising series continues in the thrilling sequel to Dark Age.

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains.

But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend.

Marooned far from home after a devastating defeat on the battlefields of Mercury, Darrow longs to return to his wife and sovereign, Virginia, to defend Mars from its bloodthirsty would-be conqueror Lysander.

Lysander longs to destroy the Rising and…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of A Memory of Light

Gina Detwiler Why did I love this book?

Having made it to the end of the 14-book Wheel of Time series, this was the big payoff, the FINAL BATTLE. And it was worth it.

As an author working on my own apocalyptic final battle scene, I studied this book carefully and realized I would never even come close to the scale and scope of Jordan’s genius. His is not just a physical battle; it’s mental, emotional, and spiritual. The sheer enormity of this series blows my mind—I look forward to rereading it through the years.

The audio version is wonderful. The Amazon series, unfortunately, bears little resemblance to the books.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Will of the Many

Gina Detwiler Why did I love this book?

This book was quite a surprise to me. It was recommended by Audible for those who liked Red Rising, and it is definitely in that same vein- science fiction/fantasy with a Roman Empire theme.

Yet it is very well-written with an interesting premise, though quite similar to the first book in the Red Rising series, where the outsider protagonist has to compete in a school of elitists. I don’t typically read science fiction, but I enjoyed this book because the characters were relatable, and the world-building was unique.
