My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of I Didn't Do It

Caryl Janis Why did I love this book?

I devoured this book, immediately drawn in by its setting at a large New York thriller writers' conference where a top award nominee is murdered onsite.

I loved how each of the prime suspects – a diverse quartet of authors at various career stages – shares his or her reactions on the day’s unfolding events revealing much about their professional and private lives, their individual personalities, and the stakes involved in achieving literary success. Suspense mounts with each new revelation.

I found the author’s tongue-in-cheek look at the contemporary publishing world and social media’s grip on it striking as well as the not-to-be-missed surprises at the end.

What is this book about?

"Brisk, snarky, and delicious." ―People Magazine

A murder at a suspense writer convention makes everyone a suspect―especially the victim’s literary rivals.

Murderpalooza, the premier thriller writers conference, is meant to be an exciting celebration of the genre and its preeminent writers. But when bestselling author and industry favorite Kristin Bailey is found dead in her hotel room, four rival authors―a midlister, an egomaniac, a has-been, and a newbie―also get targeted by an anonymous social media account and wonder if they’re next.

First, they find themselves bonding to try to find out who’s behind it. As the account taunts them, it…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The House Guest

Caryl Janis Why did I love this book?

This story begins simply, and I loved how it soon takes flight after two women meet by chance, one reaching out with a spontaneous gesture of kindness.

The plot spirals from there with a gathering momentum that left me breathless as events hurtled from seemingly innocent coincidences to more complex and deadly ones. It was easy to sympathize with the heroine as she rides a roller coaster of emotions after being recently ditched by her rich and powerful husband – ultimately questioning who and what she can trust, including her own perceptions of everything and everyone.

A top-notch thriller – and one I couldn’t put down.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Spectacular

Caryl Janis Why did I love this book?

I loved this story about a woman who looks back on bittersweet memories of her younger life in the 1950s when she defied conventional norms of the time to realize her dream of becoming one of the famed Radio City Rockettes.

Her fight to succeed, the people who helped or hindered, and the staggering events that led to her unwitting role in identifying a bomber who was terrorizing the city kept me fully engrossed and made me care deeply about her struggles. I also found much food for thought about the multiple facets of defining oneself in any era.

What is my book about?

This is an urban cozy set in 1977 New York; but despite the big city locale, there is a close neighborhood connection between the characters that is both comforting and unnerving to the young heroine, Sarah, as she tries to solve the mystery of a murdered man she accidentally stumbled on near her new workplace. With the help of her sketching skills as well as input from some old friends as well as some new ones – including a homeless woman, the local shoemaker, and the attractive detective on the case – she searches for the truth while, at the same time, unwittingly plunging headlong into danger. Along the way, she also discovers more about herself, opening up new horizons for the future.
