'It's often said that winners write history, but there are no winners here'

This is a small story about big questions.
It's a story about family, community, life.
It starts with a storm - and a death.
But how does it end?

Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about. Everyone has tried to move on, but there's something about this place that prevents it. Shenaaz Nanji Why did Shenaaz love this book?

The story is set in the Cholistan Desert in Pakistan near the border between Pakistan and India. I so admired the young 11-year-old girl Shabanu, who is strong-willed, independent, and ā€˜wild as the wind.ā€™ It tore my heart to read about the tragic encounter with a wealthy landowner that ruined Shabunuā€™s older sisterā€™s plan of marriage and when Shabanu was called upon to sacrifice all her dreams. A girl in a Muslim family always obeys her fatherā€™s wishes so when Shabanu is betrothed to an older man, I was anxious to find out if she would honor her family and heritage or follow her heart and flee.

Being a woman in love with a woman, I canā€™t get enough of positive sapphic relationship stories. This one hit all the right notes for me, including figuring out what to do with a PhD (hello!), professional and personal angst, discovering yourself, support from friends, and a happy ending.

Book cover of His Only Wife

Liz Amos Author Of All the Truths Between Us

From my list on helping you seize the day.

Why am I passionate about this?

Growing up, no one needed to tell me that Iā€™m a highly sensitive person ā€“ although they did. The label was confusing: was it a bad thing? I wasnā€™t sure. So, I tried to keep myself in check and followed my love of words into a legal career. Other peopleā€™s books became my refuge: a safe place to explore the full reach of my empathy and find connection. Reading still gives me sanctuary. Only now, since leaving law to become an author and poet myself, I also embrace the emotional rollercoaster of sharing my own creativity. Itā€™s balm for my bittersweet soul.

Liz's book list on helping you seize the day

Liz Amos Why did Liz love this book?

Developing alongside Afi Tekple through this book was like spending time with an inspirational cousin.

Despite being in my mid-thirties, I frequently feel like Iā€™m just beginning to shake off external expectations and live my own life. Unlike Afi, my scenarios donā€™t involve marrying a man Iā€™ve never met for the sake of my family. But constantly striving to ā€œdo the right thingā€ ā€“ as defined by others ā€“ has been an emotional burden.

I loved this sensitively written, funny, sensual portrayal of a woman locating her own inner compass. It helped me believe that speaking up for the contours of my existence ā€“ and even disappointing a few people along the way ā€“ is healthy. Inevitably, some things are lost as a result. But thereā€™s also much to be gained.
