Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Why read it?

3 authors picked The White Dragon as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This coming-of-age story centers on Jaxom, a young dragon rider and future lord of a hold, and his bonded dragon Ruth, a rare, small, and often silly white dragon. Jaxom thinks his greatest problem is the bullies who mock him for his status and his dragon’s unusual size, but as he strives to prove his naysayers wrong, he ends up thrown in the middle of political machinations far beyond what he could have dreamed. I love Ruth’s almost childlike nature and his fearless willingness to rise to whatever challenge they faced. Their friendship, and unique relationship with the tiny fire…

The White Dragon was the very first book I read of hers. I think I was about 16 and from the first page to the last, I was hooked! I’ve read the entire Dragonriders of Pern series many times, and it’s like visiting an old friend each time I read the series. McCaffery’s world of Pern was what spurred me to continue writing in the Fantasy genre. Her world-building was superior and each character, whether human or dragon, became good friends. So why did I choose The White Dragon? Well, I was still young enough to identify with the ‘coming of age’ story of Jaxom, and I’ve always been on the side of the underdog. What is my book about?

This book (and its sequels) are about overcoming the odds; about learning to improve the skills and abilities you have, rather than dwelling on what you can't do. Conflict, plague, and scheming politicians are all featured along the way–but none of the characters are human!

What is this book about?

When a plague kills half the Drax population, and leaves the hatchlings of the survivors with a terrible deformity – no wings – suspicion and prejudice follow. Continuously harassed by raids from their traditional enemies, the Koth, the Drax are looking for someone, or something, to blame.

Zarda, an apprentice Fate-seer, is new to her role and unsure of her own abilities; but the death of her teacher sees her summoned by the Drax Prime, Kalis, when his heir, Dru, emerges from his shell without wings.

A vision that Dru will one day defeat the Koth is enough to keep…
