Why read it?
3 authors picked Slow Productivity as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
Newport's writing often invites me to think afresh about how I manage my workload as a high school teacher and an author. This book was no different. Though I couldn't relate to all of Newport's ideas in this book, overall I found that once again Newport had given me fresh clarity and perspective I was needing.
The way we work has changed with constant interruption, a rush and quickly switching tasks. Because of it work have become miserable. This book diagnosis the problem and presents the cure. It's as simple as it seems and it involves slowing down and focusing on mastery.
Too often, books about productivity or finding a better work/life balance end up being aspirational rather than practical. We read them in hopes of change, then life sucks us back into our usual patterns. For me, those patterns include self-imposed stress, a feeling of being scattered, and too little time spent on meaningful writing.
Despite the title, the book is less about productivity and more about claiming a new relationship with work. And paradoxically, by slowing down, we get more done. Perhaps not more tasks, but more meaningful work.
Reading this book has helped me change the way I approach…
