Book description

Getting through to someone is a critical, fine art. Whether you are dealing with a harried colleague, a stressed-out client, or an insecure spouse, things will go from bad to worse if you can't break through emotional barricades and get your message thoroughly communicated and registered.

Why read it?

3 authors picked Just Listen as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

For anyone tempted to label good listening as “soft skills,” this book will prove you wrong! Even though the book was published in 2010, Goulston positions listening as a vital skill all the more needed in today’s fractious times.

Each chapter is structured with a high-stakes story, “Usable Insights,” and “Action Steps,” with excellent, researched info in between. From the chapter titled “Nine Core Rules for Getting Through to Anyone,” I personally learned so much from this book that I could apply to my daily interactions—particularly those with my very argumentative teenage daughter!

From Kymberly's list on our quietest superpower: listening.

In story after story Mark shares that the key to connecting with people is to be “More Interested Than Interesting.”

The author shares a multitude of thoughtful questions, that you will certainly want to begin to employ to communicate your interest in others. And of course, the reason I love Just Listen is that no one will ever become great at “Leading with Questions” without becoming a great listener!

When your family/staff/ friends feel heard, your relational effectiveness will skyrocket!

I’ve recommended this book to people in sales, marketing, copywriting, and management, even though you’d never see it listed as a book about those topics. That’s because the most universal experience that people crave is feeling understood, and this couldn’t be more true for your customers.

Successful founders know the importance of listening to and understanding their customers, but very few actually approach the act of listening as a practice. Unlike business books that focus on artificial experiences like interviews and focus groups, Just Listen teaches the reader the power of truly listening as a tool and a skill…
