Why am I passionate about this?

I love to write thriller/mystery books and the more twists I can come up with, the happier I am. I want the reader to be drawn in, and become a part of the stories. That’s why I picked these five books. I like the way they pull you into the stories, and keep you guessing, sometimes even to the end. I have always been fascinated by the workings of the criminal mind. I worked in Law Enforcement for over 25 years and received my Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Technology/Latent evidence, helping me to spin stories, keeping people guessing, and yearning to find out what’s happening next!

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Along Came a Spider

J.J. McGraw Why did I love this book?

I was hooked by James Patterson’s first book of the Alex Cross series by James Patterson. A predator that enjoys playing mind games with Detective Cross, and a kidnapping that sends one of those thoughts through your mind, “No, they didn’t do that, did they?” One of the things I enjoyed are the short chapters. It’s filled with psychological suspense, a real thriller that I didn’t want to put down. This is something that I crave in books. For it to grab my attention, hold it, and surprise me at the end. And Patterson delivers.

Book cover of Postmortem

J.J. McGraw Why did I love this book?

I’m the type of reader that loves a series, and Cornwell does it perfectly. Her writing pulls you into the pages of her thrillers, and the everyday life of forensic pathologist, Kay Scarpetta. Almost, as if you are a part of the Scarpetta family, or at the least, following along beside her in her work. The intrigue and suspense kept me turning the pages, falling down that rabbit hole, and whispering to myself, “I didn’t see that coming!”

Book cover of Gone Girl

J.J. McGraw Why did I love this book?

What can I say about Gone Girl? Just Wow! This thriller had so many twists and turns, I felt a little seasick while reading it. But in a good way, if there is a good way to be seasick. The storyline follows a strained marriage, a lonely wife, and a husband that begins to look like the suspect when that same wife goes missing. The story kept my attention throughout the book, trying to figure out, why did that happen, or this happens, what’s coming next, and in shock when the answers were finally revealed! I can tell you, by the end you’re going to be hating someone. I certainly did!

Book cover of The Surgeon

J.J. McGraw Why did I love this book?

I am always interested in reading serial killer stories, and this one was fantastic. The way Gerritsen pulls you into the fictional story is truly captivating. You develop a mixture of emotions, empathy, at what happens to the victims, anger, at the killer for what he/she puts the victims through, anxiety, wondering if the killer will ever be stopped, and shock at the fact one victim survived a previous attack, and is going through the same nightmare again! A true psychological thriller!

Book cover of Darkly Dreaming Dexter

J.J. McGraw Why did I love this book?

I absolutely love the Dexter books, and this was the first in the series. It rolls out the background of who Dexter is, and why he does what he does. He’s like a vigilante killer, going after serial killers, child molesters, and the like. He targets those that deserve their comeuppance. I know the books have been made into a tv series, myself, I prefer to read the books, feel the pages between my fingers, and build the scenes in my head. If you want something different, with a twist, but a “you go boy!” then Dexter is your man!
