Book cover of The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England

M.G. Herron ❤️ loved this book because...

Brandon Sanderson takes a hard left turn into a world of wizards mashed up with sci-fi technology. As a lover of mixed-genre stories, I greatly enjoyed the human and self-awareness of this witty tale. The story jumps back and forth between the handbook itself, and an amnesiac man who awakes in medieval England with only a half-fried handbook to guide him into the weird and wonderful world of wizardry.

The ending was surprisingly different than the usual Sanderson fare, and I love how this book—unlike Sanderson's other work in a sweeping Cosmere—stands on its own.

What is this book about?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson―creator of The Stormlight Archive, the Mistborn Saga, and countless bestselling works of science fiction and fantasy―comes this captivating standalone adventure that meshes Jason Bourne, epic fantasy, and time travel.

A man awakes in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Book cover of Starter Villain

M.G. Herron ❤️ loved this book because...

A cat in the business suit stared me down out of the cover for months before I bought the paperback. Like the Mona Lisa, this cat seems intelligent, and her eyes followed me everywhere I went on the Internet.

As it turns out, this story is as good as the reviews promise. A classic Scalzi standalone sci-fi mystery full of mob bosses and insanity. It's hilarious, relatable, a real fish-out-of-water story.

The main character, a washed up journalist turned substitute teacher who is as broke as he is clueless, faces hurdle after hurdle with a stoic wit. First he buries his father, then his uncle, until he falls backside first into control of a trillion-dollar enterprise with a penchant for cats.

If you need a laugh-out-loud escape from reality, Starter Villain is your cure.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By John Scalzi,

Why should I read it?

5 authors picked Starter Villain as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Locus and Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi brings us a turbo-charged tale of a family business with a difference - as Charlie discovers when he inherits it. This one comes with a hidden headquarters, minions, talking cats and James Bond-like supervillain rivals.

'Starter Villain establishes Scalzi as SF's leading humourist' - SFX

Warning: supervillain in training. Risk of world domination.

Inheriting his late uncle's business proves complicated. It's also way more dangerous than Charlie could ever have imagined. Because his uncle had kept his supervillain status a secret - until now.

Divorced and emotionally dependent on his cat, Charlie wasn't…

Book cover of Waybound

M.G. Herron ❤️ loved this book because...

What a way to land the plane! Will Wight does not disappoint.

Waybound is the ultimate installment of Will Wight's incredible progression fantasy series, Cradle. How he managed to tie every plot thread together into a satisfying ending, both taking us farther in unexpected ways and paying off the entire series' setup from the very beginning, I'll never figure out. The characters are phenomenal, and the action is non-stop.

An epic work of fantasy fiction that's 100% worth your time. Twelve books just flew right by!

Bonus points if you listen to audio: Travis Baldree narrates.

Culture Shock

By M.G. Herron,

Book cover of Culture Shock

What is my book about?

Aliens are among us. Austin, Texas just got a whole lot weirder.

When down-on-his-luck bounty hunter Anderson Gunn snags his next job, he’s just happy to get the gig.

The target he’s chasing may be wanted for murder, but his debts won’t pay themselves.

He should’ve been more selective. When Gunn finds his mark, the wanted man turns out to be no man at all. Gunn faces off against a tentacled creature out of Ridley Scott’s worst nightmare—a mind-reading offworlder wearing his skip’s skin like a onesie.

And that's just the first day.

Gunn’s world turns upside down as he gets swept up in the hunt for an escaped alien convict.

Amidst the chaos, an otherworldly puppeteer pulls hidden strings, implicating a shadowy organization with designs on Earth that are as cryptic as they are deadly.

The Gunn Files is a gripping and fast-paced sci-fi mystery with a dash of humor and the gritty allure of noir detective fiction.
