My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Slow Horses

Matt Hardman ❤️ loved this book because...

The characters, if I'm being perfectly honest. The trend for 99% of the spy thriller genre is to have characters who are unbelievably smooth (James Bond) or who consistently get everything the author can think of thrown at them and they somehow maintain this odd modicum of control over life (Bourne, Gentry, etc.)... But the crew of Slough House is, just, well, damned. They're flawed and believable. And Jackson Lamb is the icing on the cake.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Mick Herron,

Why should I read it?

15 authors picked Slow Horses as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

*Now a major TV series starring Gary Oldman*

'To have been lucky enough to play Smiley in one's career; and now go and play Jackson Lamb in Mick Herron's novels - the heir, in a way, to le Carre - is a terrific thing' Gary Oldman

Slough House is the outpost where disgraced spies are banished to see out the rest of their derailed careers. Known as the 'slow horses' these misfits have committed crimes of drugs and drunkenness, lechery and failure, politics and betrayal while on duty.

In this drab and mildewed office these highly trained spies don't run…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Gunslinger

Matt Hardman ❤️ loved this book because...

Read this as part of an ongoing process where I am working through my late brother's favorite books. This was one I picked up last month and I was not disappointed. There is a bit of a personal attachment to this book, but the book does quite well without that aspect. The genre blend is kind of jarring at times (mostly in the beginning), but once you accept that this is a universe where damned near anything goes, there are no problems.

What is this book about?

The Dark Tower is now a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba.

'The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.' The iconic opening line of Stephen King's groundbreaking series, The Dark Tower, introduces one of his most enigmatic and powerful heroes: Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger.

Roland is a haunting figure, a loner, on a spellbinding journey toward the mysterious Dark Tower, in a desolate world which frighteningly echoes our own.

On his quest, Roland begins a friendship with a kid from New York named Jake, encounters an alluring woman and faces…

Book cover of A Game of Thrones

Matt Hardman ❤️ loved this book because...

No real reason. This book represents a divergence from the genres I normally would pick up on my own, but I was pleasantly surprised... enough to begin work on my own fantasy novel.
