My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Emperor's Edge

Hannah Steenbock ❤️ loved this book because...

"Empire's Edge" is the first of a huge, epic steampunk series, so there is a lot to read if you find you love it as much as I did.

I give you a plucky heroine, a taciturn assassin and a nice assortment of sidekicks who have the most insane adventures. Of course, they are all fighting for good, that is, for a young Emperor out of his depth. For reasons (which I won't spoil).

Even better if you like snark. There is so much snark in this book!

And hey, it's free. Can't beat free entertainment, right? I promise, you will be entertained.

By Lindsay Buroker,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked The Emperor's Edge as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down.…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Black Gryphon

Hannah Steenbock ❤️ loved this book because...

A black, arrogant and yet likable gryphon, a gentle healer mage, a powerful wizard - the cast in this epic book is impressive.

Yes, it's a bit black and white (truly evil antagonist), but there are sweet romance subplots and great friendships found in the midst of a brutal war. The worldbuilding is great, and this book explains the background of the whole Valdemar world and magic Mercedes Lackey developed over decades.

I immensely enjoyed this story because of the great story-telling, the rich world and the strong plot.

(Just don't read the rest of the series. White Gryphon is still okay, forget Silver Gryphon (truly terrible).)

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Kingdoms at War

Hannah Steenbock ❤️ loved this book because...

Lindsay Buroker created a truly epic series here that spans several worlds.

And it has dragons! There are bad dragons, good dragons and a very cute one. Also a huge cast of characters, most of them snarky (it's Lindsay, after all), and many who are gray and having to choose sides. Expect truly strange conversations, and some slow-burn romance.

The entire series is fast-paced, full of magic and unexpected twists. Totally enjoyed it and binged it all.

By Lindsay Buroker,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Kingdoms at War as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

As a cartography student, Jak has always dreamed of finding the lost dragon gate and exploring and mapping distant worlds.

Developing magical powers and becoming a powerful wizard? Not a chance.

Wizards are cruel and inhumane, warring with each other from their great sky cities and keeping most of humanity enslaved. Jak wants nothing to do with them.

But when he and his archaeologist mother unearth the gate, they attract the attention of the very wizards they sought to avoid. Even more troubling, Jak starts developing magical powers of his own, powers that could rival those of the great rulers.…

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

South Breaks

By Hannah Steenbock,

Book cover of South Breaks

What is my book about?

South Breaks is the first book in my latest series, Winds of Destiny / Pillars of the Empire, definitely epic, definitely feel-good fantasy.

Several of my readers love that the story (and the sequels) are full of hope. Yes, my poor main characters go through hell, but they do find their happiness in the end.

You can read the full description in the stores, so I'll give you some tags and highlights: Found family, protective main character, clever animals, Aztec vibes, and a complex magic system.

South Breaks became a semi-finalist in the 2024 SPFBO fantasy awards. (Self-Publisher Fantasy Blog Off, a contest run through review blogs.)
