Book cover of Murder Your Employer

Andre Soares ❤️ loved this book because...

There's a certain quality to Rupert Holmes' smash hit. It seeps through the cracks of mainstream publishing to proudly shout its ambitious aspirations.

It's clever, genuinely fun/funny (British in essence, so no wonder), and challenging.

What's your outlook on murder?

Could it ever somehow be ethical? Is there a nobility to eliminating a target with careful planning? What about the demons in your past?

The ones that roam free while you are told how to properly dispose of a body?

It's a strange premise, but the execution is flawless. Also, some of the best dialogues you'll ever read.

A must-have if you are a fan of witty dark academia.

What is this book about?

A New York Times bestseller! From Edgar Award–winning novelist, playwright, and story-songwriter Rupert Holmes comes a diabolical thriller with a killer concept: The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, “a fantasy academy laid out like a combination of Hogwarts, Downton Abbey, and a White Lotus–style resort” (Los Angeles Times) dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The…

Book cover of The Familiar

Andre Soares ❤️ loved this book because...

The Familiar is MAGIC.

Magic in its setting, in the beautiful complexity of its shadowy characters, in the treatment of class divide, poverty, and access.

There’s political intrigue, a tournament, betrayal. It’s a wonderful blend of fantasy and thriller in an alternative timeline crafted with care.

I love how Leigh Bardugo pulls the strings on her puppets, how desires and reactions quickly shift like volatile tactics.

A masterpiece.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Lagos Wife

Andre Soares ❤️ loved this book because...

An exploration of Lagos' complex biodome from a British, Brooklyn-based author?

This is a dream come true for me, as a creative writer who spent years in Brooklyn and grew up in West African culture—one that I consider my strongest affiliation, even before my native Brazilian heritage.

It is the story of a London girl who settled in Lagos with her husband. Suddenly, she disappears.

When the investigation hits a dead end, her aunt flies to Nigeria in search of answers.

It’s a complex whodunnit that swerves across timelines as it explores the ins and outs of Lagos' powerful hold on eager souls.

Well-constructed, culturally relevant, and faithful. A must-read for anyone interested in Nigerian customs and sharp crime thrillers.

Haunted by fragmented memories, the man speaks of a life left behind, of a world that once was.
