Why read it?
2 authors picked The Familiar as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
I loved how I connected with the characters, and how the author framed the fundamental question, "who gets to own miracles?" I wanted to share the book with everyone and ask them about their own magic and miracles, and how they would feel if they had to give them over for someone else's enrichment. I was simultaneously angry and intrigued. I also really loved what Bardugo did in the ending.
The Familiar is MAGIC.
Magic in its setting, in the beautiful complexity of its shadowy characters, in the treatment of class divide, poverty, and access.
There’s political intrigue, a tournament, betrayal. It’s a wonderful blend of fantasy and thriller in an alternative timeline crafted with care.
I love how Leigh Bardugo pulls the strings on her puppets, how desires and reactions quickly shift like volatile tactics.
A masterpiece.
