Book cover of James

A. R. Silverberry ❤️ loved this book because...

JAMES was so original and heartfelt. Flipping the POV to Jim from Huckleberry Finn was brilliant. At times the book made me painfully uncomfortable, but it was supposed to and great books should do that, make us open our eyes to a wider understanding.

'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them' - Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha

James by Percival Everett is a profound and ferociously funny meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love, which reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. From the author of The Trees, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Erasure, adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Fairy Tale

A. R. Silverberry ❤️ loved this book because...

FAIRY TALE is Stephen King at his best. He spent a lot of time with Charlie Reade's (the main character) back story, which really made me feel I knew him, and felt for him and his trials with his father after losing his mother. My favorite character was Radar, and the relationship Charlie had with him. And Mr. Bowditch, part antagonist, later ally, really drew me in. But wait till you get to the world the fairy tale takes place in. It's the classic elements of a fairy tale twisted in King's inimitable way. A must read!

What is this book about?

A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of From the Corner of His Eye

A. R. Silverberry 👍 liked this book because...

I read this book when it came out in 2007. For a long time, it was my favorite Dean Koontz novel, so I decided to reread it. Koontz has a way of catching my attention from the opening lines and never letting me go. The way he takes the reader inside the villain's head is fabulous. Although the technique dates back to Jane Austen, I had never seen it before. Koontz's word-craft is always beautiful and evocative and a pleasure to read. That said, at times, the pacing of this book wasn't quite as fast as I remembered it. The ending was a surprise though (I had forgotten it), and well worth the read to get to!
