My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Gump & Co.

Tylia L. Flores Why did I love this book?

I enjoyed reading Gump & Co. because it’s a continuation of Forest Grump’s life and how he accepts himself as a whole when he enters a new chapter.

Despite meeting new people, he maintains his charming philosophy. I believe that the author captures the hearts of many through Forrest Gump and what he has to continue to learn why he runs his shrimp boating business, trying to build a relationship with his son after Jenny passes away.

The book is an excellent choice for those who have had trouble finding their identity in the past year.

By Winston Groom,

What is this book about?

Forrest Gump captured our hearts in the #1 New York Times bestselling novel Forrest Gump, and in the blockbuster film, winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor. Now he returns in the long-awaited sequel to the book hailed by Larry King as "the funniest novel I have ever read." A little older, and wiser in his unique way, Forrest is still running -- this time straight into the age of greed and instant gratification known as the 1980s.

Whenever I really get stumped, I go visit Jenny's grave. She tells me she's always rooting for me.…

This book is about a young man with cerebral palsy who dreamed of joining the Navy and fought to become a motivational speaker and published author. If you're looking for motivation to keep going, this book is for you.

What I loved about the book is the message that John Quinn left for those with cerebral palsy like myself, but if you have a dream, nothing is impossible, and you can always achieve that dream. You just have to go through the obstacles first, and as someone with cerebral palsy, I connected to it.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse

Tylia L. Flores Why did I love this book?

Strangers Assume My Nurse Is My Girlfriend is the perfect book to tackle the stigma against disability and dating, and it shows that everyone deserves love and that love is full of diversity.

If you're looking to find motivation and inspiration within a beautiful love story full of humor and life lessons, this book is definitely for you to read. What I loved most about this book was that it dives deeply into how disability does not conquer. Love and beauty are in the eyes of the beholder, and society shouldn't judge someone or assume that a person with a disability can never find love because they can.

By Shane Burcaw,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 14, 15, 16, and 17.

What is this book about?

With his signature wit, twenty-something author, blogger, and entrepreneur Shane Burcaw is back with an essay collection about living a full life in a body that many people perceive as a tragedy. From anecdotes about first introductions where people patted him on the head instead of shaking his hand, to stories of passersby mistaking his able-bodied girlfriend for a nurse, Shane tackles awkward situations and assumptions with humor and grace.

On the surface, these essays are about day-to-day life as a wheelchair user with a degenerative disease, but they are actually about family, love, and coming of age.
