My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Fourth Wing

Tyffany Hackett Why did I love this book?

Where do I start? It’s been a really long time since a high fantasy with dragon riders gripped me so intensely.

Not only was I completely drawn in by the on-point character banter, the worldbuilding was rich without being overbearing, and the political drama was realistic without being cumbersome like some high fantasies are.

It hit this glorious sweet spot of palatable high fantasy for people with low attention spans (haha) that I think Sarah J. Maas hits really well. Truly, I can’t recommend this book enough. Plus, the sequels are coming steadily!

Book cover of Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend

Tyffany Hackett Why did I love this book?

Okay, well, I’ve kind of been in my romance era this year. I think that’s pretty common, haha. But this book. Oh my lawd. Not only did it hit the romance sweet spot, it hit this beautiful void I didn’t even realize I had: wonderfully written neurodivergent characters.

Oh yes, that’s right. The main love interest in this one is a broody neurodivergent, and he is SO well-written. I could easily see myself in him and that was a feeling I don’t often have reading books in general, let alone romance.

We see the ups and downs of what neurodivergency means and it layers his character in a really unique and relatable way. And that’s not to discount the protagonist; she’s also neurodivergent and the way their personalities layer together was really refreshing. I LOVED this book.

What is this book about?

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends.

Yes, they've known each other for years, but they're not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She's a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he's a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of A Song of Sin and Salvation: A Rockin' 80s Romance

Tyffany Hackett Why did I love this book?

I almost feel like I need to mention this first and foremost: I’m a huge fan of Stranger Things. Why does that matter? Because if you loved Eddie and Chrisy and wanted more of them, this is THE book for you.

Not only do we see these inspired characters, but we also see them deal with their own prejudice. Trigger warning for deep religious trauma on Rebecca’s end, but let me tell you, as someone with religious trauma, this book was deeply healing for me in some ways.

The trauma is really well written, and I was thoroughly engaged in this forbidden romance.
