My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Wishing Game

Linda Joy Singleton Why did I love this book?

The Wishing Game is a heartwarming mystery about a reclusive author who invites a few (now adult) fans to secretly come to his private island and compete in a contest to win a prize worth millions: a new unpublished book in his world-famous children’s series. A young teacher desperate for money to adopt the child she loves, accepts the challenge, and her life is changed forever.

I especially loved this book because I write, read, and collect children’s series. In fact, a fan letter I wrote when I was 13 led to a life-long friendship and a co-written book with my favorite author. So, I can imagine the thrill of going to an island and solving puzzles to win a new book in a beloved childhood series.

The Wishing Game swept me up in an almost-magical world of clues, books, and characters you fall in love with. The amazing ending warmed my heart. And I will definitely read it again.

Years ago, a reclusive mega-bestselling children’s author quit writing under mysterious circumstances. Suddenly he resurfaces with a brand-new book and a one-of-a-kind competition, offering a prize that will change the winner’s life in this absorbing and whimsical novel.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Secret Book of Flora Lea

Linda Joy Singleton Why did I love this book?

I love books about books—especially mysteries. While WWII raged in London, young Bridie distracts her little sister from war horrors by creating a game about a magical land with secrets only they share. But then the younger sister vanishes….

Two decades later, Birdie has given up hope of finding her sister when she discovers a book about the game she played with her sister. No one other than the two sisters knew the secrets the book reveals. Love and hope lead Bridie to clues in pages and illustrations; opening her heart, and solving the mystery with the magic of storytelling.

The Secret Book of Flora Lea takes readers on a heartwarming journey that celebrates love between sisters. When I read this book, I wished the magical land the sisters created was real. I look forward to reading more books by Patti Callahan Henry.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Wundersmith

Linda Joy Singleton Why did I love this book?

After falling in love with the inventive, fun magic in the Harry Potter series, I looked for another series with the same combination of loveable characters, suspense, and humor set in a unique magical world. And I found these elements in the Morrigan Crow series.

The reverse of Harry, Morrigan begins her journey as the “child who was born to die at age 13.” The first book, Nevermore, opens with an exciting tale of rescue, magic, and mystery. Wundersmith continues Morrigan’s journey with a new life full of wonderfully strange friends—including a loveable giant Magnificat character. Morrigan’s quest for the Wundrous Society becomes increasingly dangerous when she’s pitted against the villainous Wundersmith—a complex villain who is both rescuer and enemy.

This is my favorite ongoing series. I have read and listened to the first three books multiple times. These are comfort books for me—taking me somewhere that intrigues, delights, and warms my heart. I am eagerly awaiting the 4th book!
