My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of None of This is True

Jo Jakeman Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because it was impossible to predict, and I had to know how it would all unfold.

It was tightly plotted and cleverly executed. I didn't particularly like the characters, but I was intrigued by them. I read this while on holiday with my family, and I have to say, I largely ignored them until I'd finished this book.

I love Lisa's books, but this one, for me, is her best, as it really made me question the assumptions I make about people. At times, I wasn't sure who the victim was. It was a really enjoyable read.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Demon Copperhead

Jo Jakeman Why did I love this book?

Okay, full disclosure: I almost didn't pick up this book because of all the prizes it had won. I made two assumptions - one, that it would not live up to the hype, and two, that it would be too 'clever' and therefore, I wouldn't enjoy it. Let me tell you, it lived up to ALL the hype, and yes, it was clever but also accessible.

My heart ached for Demon. It made me so thoughtful about people born into such terrible poverty and circumstances and how difficult it is for them to ever get on in life because the world forever drags them back down. He is a character that will stay with me for a very long time.

Why should I read it?

54 authors picked Demon Copperhead as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.

In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Drift

Jo Jakeman Why did I love this book?

I grew up on a peculiar diet of the classics and horror. So, when I wasn't reading Little Women, I was reading Pet Sematary, and I have been a horror fan ever since. The Drift is one of the best of recent years, in my opinion.

Talk about a masterclass in suspense. There's the wry humour that I love with my horror and the astute observations and relatable characters. It's a world that is far removed from our every day and yet felt all too familiar at the same time.

It's one of those 'one more chapter' books that makes you turn off the light too late.
