My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole

Irene Latham Why did I love this book?

Susan Cain has been on my radar since I read her book Quiet. I related heavily to that book and to this one even more!

I've always been drawn to sad songs, sad stories, and movies that put a lump in my throat. This book made me realize I'm not alone. More than that, this exploration into all things bittersweet and why we're drawn to them totally changed how I see myself.

I understand now that I am simply wired for "bittersweet," and that this quality can be a superpower for me as a writer and as a human. And now, looking back over my body of work, I see nearly every title contains bittersweet elements. Cool!

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Spare

Irene Latham Why did I love this book?

I love reading celebrity memoirs, and I have read a lot of them! But I am not particularly enamored of the British monarchy. Still, this one, if only for the history, seemed worth my time.

The title alone touched something in me—to grow up thinking one is a “spare” anything seems an awful load to carry. The book details Harry's recovery from being born into a dysfunctional family, which, if you take away the castles and privilege, could have been mine.

His story is one of tragedy, adventure, love, and transformation. Bittersweet? Yes. And ultimately triumphant. I loved every page.

By Prince Harry,

Why should I read it?

7 authors picked Spare as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and,…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of A First Time for Everything

Irene Latham Why did I love this book?

Set in the year 1989, this graphic memoir is a classic coming-of-age story.

Not only did the author do a great job representing the '80's—which I lived—but he also shows readers how taking risks, going on adventures, and letting loose enough to be one's true self can be a transformative experience.

Every reader, every human, has the power to reinvent oneself. With winning humor and relatable emotion, this one really resonated with the teen girl who still lives inside me.

By Dan Santat,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked A First Time for Everything as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 10, 11, 12, and 13.

What is this book about?

At first, he's right. Stuck with the same girls from his middle school who love to make fun of him, Dan doesn't know why his teacher insisted he come on this trip. But as he travels through France, Germany, Switzerland, and England, a series of first experiences begin to change him - first Fanta, first fondue, first time stealing a bike from German punk rockers . . . and first love.

Funny, heartwarming, and poignant, A First Time for Everything is a feel-good coming-of-age memoir based on New York Times bestselling author and Caldecott Medal winner Dan Santat's awkward school…
