Book cover of Reunion of the Good Weather Suicide Cult

Ephraim Why did I love this book?

The book by Kyle McCord is a deep dive into the psychological nexus that drives young souls into the arms of cults and the cult leaders who exploit them. Once you get the characters worked out between their real names and their cult names, it is very difficult to put down. The cult members morph from bloodthirsty weirdos into real people driven by the same forces that affect the lives of non-cultists.

It helped me put the finishing touches on the adolescent behavior of two of the protagonists in my book. Most importantly, it gave me the background psychology for the evolution of my new book, which is rooted directly in my experience with the Children of God.

What is this book about?

This gripping drama follows Tom Duncan, the sole survivor of the largest cult mass suicide in U.S. history, as he works to rebuild his shattered life. After a Netflix documentary accuses Tom of masterminding the plot that led to the deaths of one hundred thirty-seven people, including his wife, he finds himself exiled from his home and family. Tom seeks redemption through a weekend memorial with other cult members who escaped before the grisly end.

In Reunion of the Good Weather Suicide Cult by Kyle McCord, we see how well-meaning people seeking spiritual community can become ensnared in webs of…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Defect

Ephraim Why did I love this book?

I love nuclear terrorism plots, but most don’t really hold together. The minute details and timing in the countdown to the attack are the glue that holds this book together.

It takes a nuclear reactor expert even to know that some of these security measures exist. I like the way the bad guys get tripped up on little details as well as the way that the good guys use knowledge of the details to detect anomalies in the system and what could be causing them.

This is a strong, straightforward, manly writing style that keeps the temperature up and the pages turning.

What is this book about?

Terrorists have infiltrated the staff of the Desert Canyons nuclear power station. They want to melt it down and spread radioactive waste all over Southern California. Think it can't happen today? Think again. At two in the morning in 2013, an unknown hooded person infiltrated a nuclear power plant in Tennessee. Shots were fired. It never made national news. None of what you read here ever happened, the cover-up was too complete. This story is based on actual events.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Man Between

Ephraim Why did I love this book?

It is so realistic. How could a nerd novelist get sucked into a life-or-death spy intrigue?

All the characters are so believable in such an unbelievable story. You can almost see yourself in the protagonist’s shoes. There is tension and suspense even when there is nothing more than a writer’s conference going on.

I was turning those pages so fast to find out what was next. I am going to read it again to see if I missed anything.
