Book cover of Lessons in Chemistry

Christine J. Ko Why did I love this book?

I LOVE this book! I have always loved a good romance, and Elizabeth Zott and Calvin Evans take it to soulmate level even while she never married, intended to be childless, and is a dedicated chemist in the 1960s (though her dream of getting a Ph.D. was horribly interrupted).

As a single mother, she supports all women, whether they work inside or outside of the home, saying, “Use the laws of chemistry and change the status quo.”

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK • Meet Elizabeth Zott: a “formidable, unapologetic and inspiring” (PARADE) scientist in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show in this novel that is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel. It reminds you that change takes time and always requires heat” (The New York Times Book Review).

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Ethan Frome

Christine J. Ko Why did I love this book?

Gorgeous writing about love and the human condition and how sometimes where we land is so far from what we imagined.

Edith Wharton herself seems like a heroine for the ages. This is a great introduction to her writing if you aren’t familiar with it, and the (too) short mystery will transport you.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most

Christine J. Ko Why did I love this book?

I am in my 2nd pass of reading this book, now more slowly, while thinking about the smaller questions and the questions it poses.

I tend to read books out of page order, skipping around (which this book suggests NOT to do). I read it my way for my 1st pass and realized that to do it justice; I need to read it more carefully in page sequence. I will probably need to read it a 3rd time and journal (as the authors suggest doing).

A MUST read for parents, educators, and doctors.

By Miroslav Volf, Matthew Croasmun, Ryan McAnnally-Linz

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Life Worth Living as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

What kind of life would be truly worth wanting? What kind of world would be truly worth seeking? How should we live?

We are facing a crisis of meaning. Swept up in the obstacles of the day-to-day, the deeper questions of our fundamental purpose linger just beneath the surface of our personal lives and our collective culture. What we need is to seek the truth.

In Life Worth Living, leading Yale theologians Volf, Croasmun and McAnnally-Linz offer a deep dive beneath the levels of habit, strategy and introspection to the bedrock question of what kind of life is truly worth…
