Book cover of Lavender's Blue

Meg Benjamin ❤️ loved this book because...

I've missed Jennifer Crusie's books so much, so it was a joy to see this new series she did with Bob Mayer. The three books stood on their own, but they fit together beautifully, exploring the mysterious goings on beneath the bland surface of small town Ohio. Since it's a Crusie book, the characters are quirky, the dialogue fast and furious, the romance hot and heavy. But it's also a Mayer books, which means serious threats and violence lurking close-by. Plan on reading all three books--you won't want to stop with just one. And plan on starting their new series soon thereafter. And cross your fingers (as I am) that they keep going with more series to come.

What is this book about?

From the NY Times Bestselling duo that wrote Agnes and the Hitman, the first book in a new series.

Liz Danger has come home after fifteen years to deliver a giant teddy bear for her mother’s birthday (color: Guilt Red) when a cop with a great ass picks her up for speeding, fixes the missing lug nuts in her back wheel, pulls her out of a ditch, doesn’t give her a ticket, and helps her avoid her family. This is a man with real potential.

Vince Cooper picks up Liz for speeding and his life gets a lot more interesting.…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of My Name Is Barbra

Meg Benjamin ❤️ loved this book because...

Barbra Streisand's autobiography requires a commitment--it's over a thousand pages or, if you listen to the audio version as I did, fifteen hours. But it's worth it. Streisand has led a fascinating life full of events you know about and ones you don't, as well as people you've heard of and those you haven't. I recommend the audio version because listening to Streisand tell her own story is a hoot. She's a real raconteur, and you feel like you're her best friend by the end. As an added bonus, when she refers to her music, she plays a clip so that you can hear what she's talking about. I won't kid you: you'll spend a long time listening here (and if you use a library copy like me you'll probably come perilously close to your turn-in time). But it's a great ride.

What is this book about?

The long-awaited memoir by the superstar of stage, screen, recordings, and television

Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in the history of popular music. She has been nominated for a Grammy 46 times, and with Yentl she became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major motion picture. In My Name Is Barbra, she…

Book cover of A Gentleman Fallen on Hard Times

Meg Benjamin ❤️ loved this book because...

Grace Burrowes' Lord Julian series is a delight. This is the first book, but she's now up to book six. As usual with Burrowes, they're all set in regency England, but unlike her romances, these are closer to cozy mysteries. Lord Julian is a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, and he's not a happy man. One of his brothers died in the war, possibly as a result of Julian's miscalculation. The English haut ton suspect that he's a traitor and shun him. His beloved Hyperia is furious with him. His family is unsure what to do with him. But beneath his traumatized exterior, Julian's brain is still sharp and his powers of deduction (honed by his years as an intelligence officer) are still formidable. As a character, Julian is tantalizing and the mysteries he unravels reveal almost as much about him as they do about the society around him. Once you start, you'll want to finish the entire series.
