Book cover of The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida

Dana Facaros ❤️ loved this book because...

Another but very different book where the main character is dead! A very clever fun ride, but also a pretty serious indictment of Sri Lanka's politics and corruption.

What is this book about?

Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida-war photographer, gambler, and closet queen-has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali. He has seven moons to contact the man and woman he loves most and lead them to…

Dana Facaros ❤️ loved this book because...

Moving on from dead characters in novels to dead writers of classic travel literature about Afghanistan. Byron's superb evocation of Afghanistan in the 1930s revolutionized the art of travel writing, as did the equally delightful Eric Newby's A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, written in the 1950s.

What is this book about?

"The Road to Oxiana" is an account of Robert Byron’s ten-month journey to Iran and Afghanistan in 1933–34 in the company of Christopher Sykes. This travelogue is considered by many modern travel writers to be the first example of great travel writing. Bruce Chatwin has described it as “a sacred text, beyond criticism” and carried his copy since he was fifteen years old, “spineless and floodstained” after four journeys through central Asia.By the Si-o-seh pol bridge in Isfahan, Iran, Byron wrote: “The lights came out. A little breeze stirred, and for the first time in four months I felt a…
