Ghetto Tarot

By Alice Smeets,

Book cover of Ghetto Tarot

What is my book about?

The Ghetto Tarot is a unique and visually rich reimagining of the classic Rider-Waite Tarot deck, photographed in the vibrant streets of Haiti. Created by Belgian photographer Alice Smeets, the deck features traditional tarot scenes recreated in collaboration with Haitian artists from the group Atis Rezistans. The artists crafted props and scenes using everyday objects and recycled materials, giving each card an earthy, grounded aesthetic while maintaining the symbolic essence of traditional tarot imagery.

The deck powerfully captures the vibrancy, resilience, and creativity of Haitian culture. Each card resonates with the archetypal meanings of tarot but has an added layer of socio-cultural commentary. By situating the deck within an authentic urban environment, Ghetto Tarot challenges stereotypes and presents a nuanced view of Haitian life, inviting users to reflect on themes of resilience, transformation, and the richness of inner worlds even amidst external challenges.

This deck can be used like any traditional tarot set, with each image intended to prompt introspection and provide guidance, offering a fresh, grounded perspective on the tarot's universal messages.
