My favorite read in 2023

Book cover of London Country

Michael Keenaghan Why did I love this book?

This is a great addition to this author's output, a novel that follows the latest escapades of several characters from his earlier works, Human Punk, White Trash, and Skinheads.

Lots of music and relevant social issues are here and as ever the writing is great. Bursting with cultural references, it’s a working class classic set in the satellite towns of West London.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Shards

Michael Keenaghan Why did I love this book?

This book, with its 80s soundtrack throughout, is a murder mystery set in the filmic hills of Los Angeles.

A killer is stalking the streets, mansions, and nightclubs, leaving a trail of youthful bodies across a nostalgic la-la land. Ostensibly a true story experienced by the author himself, the story is well paced and thrillingly told. Overall I found it a highly addictive read. It’s a lengthy book but I actually wanted more.

By Bret Easton Ellis,

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of O Brother

Michael Keenaghan Why did I love this book?

This is Niven’s first non-fiction book, a memoir that revolves around the memory and suicide of his brother.

As Niven succeeds in life, going from university to a touring band and onto a lucrative position in the music industry, his black sheep brother dabbles in drug dealing and petty crime, and ends up chronically broke and depressed.

There’s lots of music running through this coming-of-age tale, from punk and indie to rave, but when the party ends the hangover is harsh. It’s a poignant tale of the quiet epidemic of male suicide, and the final chapter written in his brother’s voice as he takes his own life is as compelling as it is disturbing.

By John Niven,

Smiler with Knife: Stories from the Dark Heart of London

By Michael Keenaghan,

Book cover of Smiler with Knife: Stories from the Dark Heart of London

What is my book about?

This powerful collection of stories takes you to London's drinking dens, backstreets, and shadowy housing estates where coppers, criminals, and the plain hard-done-by are faced with all life can throw at them. Brutal, uncompromising, at times blackly funny, Smiler with Knife is a gripping tour through the urban jungle and the shadier quarters of the human condition.
