Book cover of Echo: The Complete Edition

Carolyn Watson Dubisch Why did I love this book?

When Julie takes an afternoon to explore her passion for photographing plants, her life is changed forever. An explosion in the sky rains a metallic substance down upon her and forms a breastplate she cannot remove and begins to change her in ways she could never have imagined.

Everything was incredible about this graphic novel, from the carefully rendered and realistic art to the character development and the rapidly paced story that pulls you in until the very last page. Honestly, I can’t recommend this book highly enough, especially if you are new to reading graphic novels.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Winter Men

Carolyn Watson Dubisch Why did I love this book?

Set in post-Cold War Russia with some parts in Brooklyn, New York, this riveting graphic novel is an incredible adventure focusing on Kris, a Moscow policeman charged with tracking down a kidnapped child.

This is a graphic novel, and the art by John Paul Leon is just amazing. It's gritty and real and also technically brilliant. The story draws you in, and the dialogue feels so, so genuine. I have always been fascinated by Russia, and this book made me want to read more about the region.

Earlier this year, I was suffering from bronchitis for nearly 8 weeks. As a primary school art teacher, I’m always picking up bugs from the kids. This book was so engaging between the plot and the art that I could go for 30 to 40 minute stretches without coughing. It was sort of a miracle.

What is this book about?

In the modern, post-collapse Soviet Union, criminal gangs rule under the aegis of a crumbled government, and old soldiers roam the streets...as do old superheroes. One such man is Kris Kalenov, a former member of the Russian elite military force 'Red 11', now a Moscow policeman. Caught up in a kidnapping case, Kalenov encounters the dark heart of the New Russia at every turn, bringing him into conflict and allegiance with friends and enemies alike as he searches for both a missing girl, and the secret of the Soviet super-project codenamed 'Winter'. My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Earthlings

Carolyn Watson Dubisch Why did I love this book?

The premise of this short novel is that humans are being engineered by aliens to be a variety of sizes. Quite a lot of sizes, really. I almost wish there was a diagram.

That said, the book was really engaging and had some of the most off-the-wall sex scenes I’d ever read.
It reminded me of that crazy, weird animated movie “Fantastic Planet” from the 1970s. Whenever you pair giant humans with tiny people, things get bizarre, and this author certainly delivered on that!

This book is illustrated with some incredible drawings by author-illustrator Mike Dubisch. I loved how this book takes the reader into a whole other world that truly stays with you for months after reading it.

The Dragon in the Closet

Orin Bean has terrible luck and a problem with monsters. Also, his Nana seems to be a powerful witch, but he's really a perfectly normal boy who just happens to have a dragon in the closet. What kid wouldn't want that?
