Book cover of The Hidden Eyes of Inna Lim

Carolyn Watson Dubisch I ❤️ loved this book because...

This young adult book grabs the reader from the first page.

Inna Lin is a girl living in a small village in the Philippines with her very big family. They are very impoverished and the struggle for them to put food on the table is palpable, but their joy and caring for each other is significant. When Inna receives a special bracelet on her 12th birthday everything changes for her.

She discovers she has some new powers and uses them to help her family thrive, unfortunately this attracts unwanted attention and Inna finds herself in trouble. The characters in this book are well-written and feel very real. The plot moves at an excellent pace, especially for the target age. This book made me cry.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Gothic Nightmares

Carolyn Watson Dubisch I ❤️ loved this book because...

The originality of this book of two short stories was incredible. I have never read anything quite like it.

I was especially draw in by the second story about the Alchemist who caters to the rich by creating ever more disturbing creatures to satisfy their strange sexual appetites. It escalates very quickly.

This book has some incredible illustrations and the horror stories are deeply disturbing but fun short reads.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Magic Hour

Carolyn Watson Dubisch I ❤️ loved this book because...

A brilliant child psychologist is faced with a terrible lawsuit that dismantles her career. When her sister calls her back to her hometown to help with a mysterious child who has wandered out of the woods. Is this really a wolf girl or just a poor lost child? When she fosters the little girl and spends the winter teaching her to talk is probably some of the most powerful writing I have read. So many emotions this writer evokes from these pages.

Her quirky new neighbor has a house full of knickknacks and odd tiny creatures beckoning from the shadows, and there's a terrible curse on the town that makes every summer storm a life-threatening event. Welcome to the town of Deluge.
