Why read it?

Amulet is a masterwork of story, imagination, and art.
Tragic circumstances lead to Emily, her younger brother, and her mother having to move into the run-down home of a relative. While cleaning, Emily uncovers an amulet, which almost seems to be meant for her.
That night, her mother is kidnapped by a monster and in order to rescue her, Emily and her brother rush through a portal into another world. And that’s just the beginning!
Emily is a strong young woman who makes bold choices and fiercely defends her family. This adventure story is epic!
From J. C.'s list on young readers featuring a strong female protagonist.
Like many of my favorite stories, Amulet begins with a tragedy and descends into a mystery. Kazu Kibuishi has crafted a highly imaginative world, that has a wonderful creepy feel to it. It’s a tale of two siblings who, lost and alone in the darkness, must find their way in a strange world as they race to rescue their mother from a terrible monster.
A great read for middle grade and older and the first in a sprawling adventure series.
From Eric's list on adventure and strange mystery fantasy.
