Grant’s book is yet another series that feature young adults who wield extraordinary powers.

From burning lasers, to telekinesis, to canceling gravity itself, I was fascinated to discover all of the gifts that these teens inherited once their little home of Perdido Beach became isolated, in space and time, from the rest of the world.

In addition to those supernatural elements, Grant explores the very gritty reality of what it would be like to live in an isolated city, devoid of adults in which these teens are forced to govern, manage, lead, and feed their group with ever-diminishing resources.

This is the book that inspired me to begin my journey as an author. My grandmother purchased this novel for me as a birthday present in middle school and I instantly fell in love with the series that spans nine novels.

Michael Grant’s story of a group of young adults and children trapped inside a dome without any adult supervision is a triumphant, but heartbreaking masterpiece. The trials and tribulations of the FAYZ will keep readers on the edge of their seats the entire time.

The Gone series is exceptional. Over seven books long but never does it lose its pace or become boring. The idea of nuclear power in combination with alien DNA to produce foreign DNA in humans where many develop subsequent powers is always one that’s fascinated me. What I like about Grant’s series, is these powers aren’t always used for good. Some of them are terrifying, unique, and formidable in the wrong hands. We never know which side might win, and there are so many stakes, it’s dangerous to get attached to any one character.
