Why read it?
2 authors picked Be My Baby as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
Every Christmas, I get a huge stack of celebrity memoirs as a gift. Between Christmas and New Year's, all I read is celebrity memoirs. This one is fantastic. Ronnie Spector's voice is so clear and engaging that you feel like you're experiencing her rise with her. The book is undeniably wrenching but even in her worst moments, Ronnie Spector's spirit shines so brightly through. Her story is a window into any number of topics--girl group dynamics, domestic violence, the music of 60s, even the Beatles--and it's a wonderful read.
It was revelatory to read about the struggles and oppression that this icon had to face in her life and career, especially at the controlling and abusive hands of her infamous producer/husband, Phil Spector. I was astonished to learn how hard Ronnie fought to break away to survive and to sing the truth, although she always made it seem effortless.
Despite all the hardship, it is refreshing that she told her story candidly. I love books about wild rock n’ roll experiences told by actual survivors, and this is one of the best! Ronnie’s memoir has been revised and updated…
