Why read it?

3 authors picked A House with Good Bones as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I've never read a horror story like this one! First, our protagonist and viewpoint character is a unique delight, from her close and turbulent relationship with her family to her (well researched, as far as I can tell!) extensive insect knowledge, and even more features you just don't see in the average haunted house protagonist.

This book hooked me before I even picked it up. The cover art alone was enough, this book is beautiful.

I saw it on the table at my local bookshop and went straight to it.

Once I started reading, I quickly realized this book was beautiful inside and out. To say I devoured this book is an understatement. I’m officially addicted to this writer now.

The main character was instantly likable and fun. The atmosphere was spot on, cozy but creepy. The family drama mixed with the supernatural mystery was captivating and ultimately the ending was satisfying.

T. Kingfisher is an auto-buy author for me; I devour her books over the course of days if not hours. She’s versatile and so talented. But it is her contemporary horror novels that I adore the most, for their signature quirky heroines who find themselves in absolutely chilling, sinister scenarios.

A House with Good Bones is one of Kingfisher’s latest offerings (at least, ‘latest’ at the time of writing—she’s very prolific) and it blew my mind with its fresh take on suburban horror, dark magic, the occult, and dangers lurking in our own backyard.

This book has everything I adore…
