My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

Sam Parks ❤️ loved this book because...

I love the way this cosy fantasy immerses you in the world. Not only is the description of Ljosland evocative and irresistible, but the cultural scope of faeries and the academia around them are so well fleshed out. The footnotes add to the story and the immersion rather than detracting from them. And don't get me started on Wendell, my new favourite book boyfriend!

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of A Psalm for the Wild-Built

Sam Parks ❤️ loved this book because...

Becky Chambers is incredible at showing the humanity of every character, even (and especially) those who aren't actually human. In fact, it's the non-human character in this book who teaches us the most about what humanity actually means. I also loved how easy it was to dip into this; not only is it short, but like other Becky Chambers books, the language is very accessible and modern.

Why should I read it?

13 authors picked A Psalm for the Wild-Built as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.

One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honour the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of 'what do people need?' is answered.

But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They're going to need to ask it a lot.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Sea of Tranquility

Sam Parks ❤️ loved this book because...

Emily St John Mandel is brilliant at speculative fiction that feels close and personal, which is hard to do when the scope is as large as it is in this novel. I also loved the way the story came together; I've rarely been so satisfied as I was with this ending!
