Book cover of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard

Lyra R. Saenz ❤️ loved this book because...

The diverse cast of characters was incredible. Yeah, the main character is a basic blond, but he has a heart of gold, lived as a homeless kid for a while, and goes to an afterlife where he is the minority because of his heritage.

But the character that really made me fall in love with the series is his love interest, a gender fluid, take-no-prisoners, shapeshifting child of Loki who gives no cares on whether you like him/her or not. This character lives her/his truth and he/she will fight you if you so much as look at her/him wrong. You will respect, or you will be flung out the nearest window.

What is this book about?

All three books in the best-selling Magnus Chase trilogy, collected in a gift-worthy paperback boxed set.
Magnus Chase, a once-homeless teen, is on a death-defying quest across the Norse realms, literally.
As a resident of the Hotel Valhalla, this son of the god Frey is now one of Odin's chosen warriors.
Magnus and his friends, Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, Samirah the Valkyrie, and other heroic characters must use all their wits and special talents in order to defeat fearsome giants, lethal creatures, and meddlesome gods in order stave off Ragnarok.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Beast Within Me

Lyra R. Saenz ❤️ loved this book because...

The Best Within Me is an emotional rollercoaster.

A woman running from her nature as a werewolf has to confront the fear she has of herself and choose whether to be with the human she has wanted to marry for several years or if she wants to throw that normal life away to be with the handsome hunk of a werewolf she meets while on the run.

I love this story because it isn't just a romance novel. There's blood and gore, murder and mayhem. It's an illustration of what women go through when the standards of society view them as pretty pictures rather than living, breathing flames that can and will burn you should you try to put her out.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Accidental Magic

Lyra R. Saenz 👍 liked this book because...

What can I say? It's witchy, it's fluffy, it's got a murder mystery. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, because of the amount of the secondhand embarrassment in it, but the characters were likeable, and it's outside of the typical young heroine tropes we see.

The main character is also a single mother, and she has my heart. You that feeling you get when you walk into a room and forget why you went in there. That is this MC in a nutshell. She is that feeling, and watching her navigate the changes to her life was really nice.
