My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Venomous Lumpsucker

Joe Craig ❤️ loved this book because...

I haven’t read anything before that so delicately combines being unsettling and funny, as well as being bonkers but gripping. It had some unforgettable moments and images that have stayed with me and changed the way I see the world. The writing is brash and brilliantly show-off-y - and so good I don’t mind the showing off one bit.

What is this book about?

A dark and witty story of environmental collapse and runaway capitalism from the Booker-listed author of The Teleportation Accident.

The near future. Tens of thousands of species are going extinct every year. And a whole industry has sprung up around their extinctions, to help us preserve the remnants, or perhaps just assuage our guilt. For instance, the biobanks: secure archives of DNA samples, from which lost organisms might someday be resurrected . . . But then, one day, it’s all gone. A mysterious cyber-attack hits every biobank simultaneously, wiping out the last traces of the perished species. Now we’re never…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Fup

Joe Craig ❤️ loved this book because...

Beautiful and funny, with characters I was really drawn to and I longed for them to thrive. It felt like I learned something about humanity, but in a story that’s light and funny.

By Jim Dodge,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Fup as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Start with Granddaddy Jake Santee, a cantankerous, ninety-nine-year-old coot with a taste for gambling and whiskey; add in Tiny, his gentle giant of an adopted grandson, whose passion for building well-crafted fences on land with no livestock borders on obsessive; then add Fup, a twenty-pound mallard with an iron will and a fondness for hooch and romantic movies. What do you get? You get Fup-a wildly eccentric modern classic that invites you to sit a spell and wet your whistle while it regales you with tales of teaching Fup to fly, the Sunday morning pig hunt, and the Great Checker…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets

Joe Craig ❤️ loved this book because...

This book is totally overwhelming and has changed the way I think of the whole of the 20th century, and people as a whole. What an incredible way to tell a historical story that has no single true viewpoint. And so, so powerful.
