My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Homecoming

Cheryl Burman ❤️ loved this book because...

Love everything by this author, but this is my favourite. Dual timeline historical fiction with a touch of magical realism set partly in the 1950s in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, which is when and where my own book Keepers is set and where I'm originally from. So for me it was very much a homecoming. The murder mystery keeps you guessing, the characters are great, her depiction of the Australian landscape is divine, and all round, a highly enjoyable read.

Book cover of Water for Elephants

Cheryl Burman ❤️ loved this book because...

Gruen paints her scenes with vivid brush strokes, her people are so real you can hear them talk, and her animals likewise - especially Rosie. Incredibly sad in parts, at the end the tale is properly uplifting. The author’s notes are highly worth reading, adding to the heartbreak in some instances. It was a different world back then.

Book cover of The Secrets of Flowers

Cheryl Burman ❤️ loved this book because...

The research was amazing, and the tale of Violet, the Titanic survivor, was brilliantly told. I loved the fact that she was a real person. The modern tale is different from the normal romance tropes and beautifully realistic. It is a gentle, satisfying read and a book that deserves more readers.

At eight months pregnant, Raine shouldn’t be on a jolting bus crawling through snow searching for her husband. He might not want to be found. She might not want to find him.

When Raine Merrett’s beloved Pop needs medical treatment in the city, her family reluctantly leaves the familiar calm of the countryside. But it's post WW2 Australia, there’s a housing shortage, and the family must live in a migrant camp on the flat plains outside the city. Determined to be strong, Raine tackles her hated new life in a Nissen hut with gritty persistence.

Along with thousands of others, Teddy Greene’s family has abandoned war-ruined London’s East End for the promise of a better life down under. For now, they too must make do with the sparse living of the camp.

When Teddy and Alf, best mates since childhood, rescue Raine from a drunken attack, their heroism ignites a whirlwind of passion, uncertainty, and heartache as Raine strives to discover where her true path to happiness lies.
