My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Tom Lake

Cameron Walker ❤️ loved this book because...

I started reading Tom Lake at a writing residency and it quickly became an important part of my morning routine. I've read most of Ann Patchett's novels, and this was my absolute favorite. The combination of the close ties between a mother and her daughters on a cherry farm during the COVID-19 pandemic and the memories of the main character, Lara's, found family during a production of "Our Town" might seem treacly at first, but this novel confronts real problems, from the future of raising children during a changing climate to the capriciousness of memory, and the love that can shine through both the past and the present.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Sandwich

Cameron Walker ❤️ loved this book because...

I'm normally a fast reader--which can be both a blessing and a curse. I can speed through books, but sometimes I miss out on the scenery along the way. As soon as I started Sandwich, I wanted to slow down so I could thoroughly enjoy Catherine Newman's hilarious and moving story of a woman "sandwiched" between her mostly-grown kids and her aging parents, and filled with love for both. The narrator's memories of early parenthood echoed my own--the exhaustion! the exhilaration!--while her descriptions of life nearing menopause had me laughing out loud (my favorite: a relatable mishap during a conversation with an AirBNB host).

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Book of Love

Cameron Walker ❤️ loved this book because...

I love stories about teenagers because that age still feels so vivid to me--the highs and lows, the drama, the dawning of the harsher realities of the world, and the big, big love that comes alongside it. Kelly Link's first novel has all of this--plus magic, and a group of friends whose complicated relationships with themselves and with each other kept me reading this book long past my bedtime. This small act of rebellion made me feel even closer to the teenager I once was.
