My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Bitter Wash Road

Sam Holland Why did I love this book?

Constable Paul ‘Hirsch’ Hirschhausen is a whistle-blower. Hated and despised, he has been exiled to a one-cop station in the middle of dusty nowhere. There are fugitive killers on the loose, the body of a sixteen-year-old girl, grumpy locals, and gun-toting landowners; more than one constable can handle, that’s for sure.

This book was everything I wanted from an Australian crime novel: a stoic but scrupled cop, the baking Aussie landscape, and a series of call-outs and crimes where everything comes together perfectly at the end.

By the finale of this book, I was so caught up with Hirsch and the atmosphere of this desolate Australian town I went straight to the next book in the series and didn’t stop until I reached the end. I recommend you do the same.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Notes on an Execution

Sam Holland Why did I love this book?

I love a serial killer book, especially one that can bring something different and original to the table. This book was exactly that.

The book does not tell the story of Ansel Packer, a serial killer due to die on death row; it focuses on the lives of the women around him. Of Saffy, the detective trying to track him down; Hazel, twin sister of his wife; and Lavender, his mother. The tragedy of this tale is shown through their eyes and the shock waves he leaves in his wake.

Beautifully written, poignant, and heart-rendering; I adored this book.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Last King of California

Sam Holland Why did I love this book?

Everybody recommended Jordan Harper to me. This can be both a blessing and a curse; could expectations be met? Of course, they were. Exceeded and then some.

This book tells the story of Luke, visiting family for the first time in years and discovering that The Combine, a gang run by his uncle, no longer feels like home. But as he tags along with his childhood friend, Callie, he gets caught up in a gang war and is forced to join them in order to save everything he holds dear.

Harper is an exquisite writer with a distinctive style all of his own. He approaches acts of extreme violence with a critical eye and a straightforward manner, leaving you racing through the chapters, desperate to know what happens, at the same time as trying to savor every single word.

'Beautifully written' S. A. Cosby

Sometimes to find yourself, you have to go back to where you came from.
You just might not like what you find.

After failing in his new life, Luke decides to go home, back to the one place where he'd once felt he belonged. But that was a long time ago and now he has to face the life that he chose to run away from: The Combine. The gang that his uncle now leads, but which his father still runs from prison. Brutal, unforgiving . . . family.

Reunited with his childhood friend Callie…

The Twenty

By Sam Holland,

Book cover of The Twenty

What is my book about?

A shocking crime scene. DCI Adam Bishop is rocked by a chilling discovery: five murder victims, each marked with a number. And, the spray-painted daubs reveal a horrific truth: the killer is counting down.

A case that twists and turns. When Dr Romilly Cole learns of the murders, she is forced to confront a past she had hoped to bury. But getting involved with the case means colliding with Bishop, a risky move with a complicated history.

A race against time to stop a killer. As the bodies keep falling, Adam and Romilly link the crimes to an old case, and only Romilly holds the key. But the clock’s ticking, and as the numbers edge toward zero, the murders get closer to home.
